As a general rule, people tend to think prison is much more enjoyable than it actually is.
The worse prison is, the worse they are when they come out. Harsher prisons are worse for society at large.
Last I heard, prison was to punish those who broke the law. Is there another purpose?

The only death penalty in Britain I would like to see is one handed out to someone who has committed regicide.
But he'd deserve a medal, first.

There should be. We put enough money into prisons that we ought to get something useful out of it. Rehab the vast majority and the death (key word here) penalty is used for those most heinous of offenses, as it ought to be the only actual punishment dished out from the courts.FEOS wrote:

We have murderers killing innocent people, getting a life sentence, and sitting comfortably in a place we think we don't want to go to. But prisoners have more rights than old people. On the news it said prison life was so nice, prisoners didn't want to leave. Should prison be this nice?
Should people who have killed innocent peole just sit there and make friends and laugh?
Go to prison for a year and tell me its nice. Then you might have a poimt.
Trust me, in the UK we spend FAR too much on our prisons, they hold standards of 3 star hotels. This is a place for punishment and rehabilitation not for a fucking holiday. They get TV's, consoles, computers, etc in their ROOMS, fair enough have a common room with entertainment, but personal entertainment in their own rooms, with free food, this shit is better than some of their living standards outside of prison, if anything nice prisons encourage people who have poor standards of living to commit more crime, because firstly even if they don't get caught its an easy way to make a quick buck, or if they do get caught they end up living better off anyway.ZombieVampire! wrote:

nuff said.
Blackbelts are just whitebelts who have never quit.
Exactly.
As has been said, I'd like to see you spend some time in prison and then see what you have to say.
Besides which, the fact that prisons are about punishment is half the reason reoffence rates are so high. Punishment doesn't work.

Punishment should be a byproduct, for sure. The main focus of prison SHOULD be rehabilitation so people won't commit crimes again. The heinous recidivism rate should be reason enough to reconsider the role of prisons in society.DesertFox- wrote:

Clearly you haven't seen UK prisons if you think they don't spend too much on criminals.ZombieVampire! wrote:

Have you lived in one?
No but that doesn't change the fact that they are far too nice if they have more spent on them than people who serve in the military.
The opinion im getting from you is. Prisoners are more important than service men and women.

Yes, because saying that you'd hate a prison if you spent time in it is clearly saying that it's nicer than an organisation to which membership is entirely voluntary which people continue to join
You don't even have a source for your numbers.

Idiot. They are allowed playstations, computers, exercise. More food than old people get. More rights than old people. And, they all get a roof over their heads at night, unlike many. Tell me thats not nice.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

I am not an idiot, and what you describe is bullshit. How could they have more rights than old people, unless those old people were in jail too?SEREVENT wrote:

Ever been to jail, let alone prison? You can't shit without 10 people knowing exactly what you are doing. You can't go to the grocery store and buy whatever you want. You can't take a stroll whenever you want. You can't come and go as you please. You can't do much without asking permission and having someone watch you.
Jail isn't all candycanes and roses, chap. You are the idiot for assuming such. It fucking sucks, and you have no freedom.
Or we could go back to hard labor as a punishment...then we don't have to worry about so many jobs that others "don't want to do" being done by illegals.DesertFox- wrote:

Yes, I see the irony there.

You should get what you give, you kill, you become killed
I say you should die the way your victims died, painfully.

Thankfully we as Americans don't believe in archaic Old-Testament philosophy.
Sounds like where I live.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:

I love how people who already have everything think freedom is something everyone so desires above all else, you will find that people who are barely feeding their family don't give a shit about freedom, they want some damn food. I know more than a few people who would happily spend time in prison because its better than what they get outside, one of these guys has already been in once for 2 months.
Maybe in America you cant shit without 10 people knowing but in UK jails they are allowed to be out of their cells something like 12 hours a day, thats more time than I spend out of my own room anyway! And the rest of the time they spend "locked up" they have as good forms as entertainment than you, if not better.
As to them losing freedoms what a load of shit. The only freedom they lose is the right to go anywhere that is public property. They still have human rights, they still get access to drugs (even though they aren't meant to), alcohol, food, entertainment, health care, exercise, lawyers, etc
Tbh they have comparable rights to a soldier on active duty, someone who is doing a job for his country compared with someone who committed a crime against it.
I would love for UK prisons to go American style, especially that one where the governor changed the uniform to pink and brought back manual labor gangs among other reforms that massively cut the prisons budget.
As to the figures bub I read books, I read newspaper articles, I watch the news and documentary's. Thats how I know the figures, I don't mind if you know them or even share my opinion, me spending my time searching the web for figures won't change your mind anyway so why would I bother.
This from the guardian:
"With annual costs per prisoner standing at £44,000" That is far too much money to be spending on someone who deserves next to nothing. I don't even spend £44,000 on myself each year, I spend around £9k max.

Well, I can't speak for UK jail but having been to jail in the US I can say it sucks, and I would never want to go there again. And I was in a minimum security jail where we were allowed all kinds of shit, including ping pong, billiards, and Playboys.
punishment doesn't work? What do you recommend...cash prizes for the worst criminal...lol?ZombieVampire! wrote:
