hello tech friends,

i went to dinner with my mother last night, and she told me that she won a gift card to best buy. she wanted me to go with her, so i could help carry this floor cleaner thing she bought.
so anyway, she decided to let me use the rest of her gift card on PC parts. i suppose out of pity....not really questioning why, cause i need some new shit

anyway, i have changed a GPU before, but never a power supply. so im definitely getting a power supply, but im going to try and walk out of there with an 8800 as well.
my question for you guys is, what are going to be the steps once i get back to my house to install everything?
GPU first, then PSU?

im not really sure where im supposed to start, so i could really use some help.

also, if someone could explain the whole rail/voltage thing, that would be awesome....

ok, i dont really know whats on the card. she didnt specify, and since she is just buying me shit, i dont want to get all specific on her.....then she might just tell me to shove it

as far as my specs, i dunno lol

i mean, i have a dual core, 2gb of ram....i tried searching on the HP site, but couldnt find anything.

if it makes any difference, its an HP pavilion a1667c

Most PSU's require you to remove the motherboard in order to install it, good luck.

unscrew the four screws at the back of your case for the old PSU
disconnect everything it's connected to. remember what was plugged in!

install the new PSU. screw the four screws in. reconnect everything.

boot up the machine. if everything seems good, right click on my computer and click manage. click device manager. hit the + sign next to display adapters. right click on whatever's there, click properties. click the driver tab, uninstall. turn off the computer

take out the old card, put in the new one. when the computer boots up, install drivers from the CD, and restart.

is everything okay? if so, good, you should probably install the latest drivers from nvidia now. download the latest drivers from their site, uninstall the CD drivers, and boot up and install the newest drivers.

12V rail - the only thing i know about the 12V rail is that it powers your video card. that's probably the most important thing it does, actually. but i can't explain much, take a look at kyle's guide and maybe it can explain more - http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=77096

not true! in fact, i've never had to remove a motherboard to install a PSU before.

Parker - how much money on the gift card do you have? What are your current computer specs? We could browse around the Best Buy site a bit to help you pick the best parts for what you can spend.

Remember to install the drivers

There was an insane ammount of threads about new cards performing horribly on OCForums a while ago. They just forgot to install the drivers.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
