It is really easy, im just having a brain fart.

if N = -3 then N^2 - N = ?

It goes
-3^2 + 3=
-9 + 3 = -6

Now the probelm im having is with the exponent

-3^2 is -9
but
(-3)^2 is 9

I'm not sure if when you substitute the -3 for N if it is in parenthesies or not.

Help please!

Gah, I always have the same problem as you.

-3 x -3 is 9, because a negative times a negative is a positive.
9 subtract -3 is the same as just add it, so your answer is 12.

I think...

Is it in parenthesis or not?

If you wrote the problem right, the answer is 12.  Definitely not 6.

Whenever you substitute a value for a variable, the value has parentheses around it.  Always.
