rather than a ban on guns, how about a tax?

the most frequent offenders are lower class, and would be unable to afford a highly taxed firearm

First off, it doesn't sound like you are a normal citizen because most citizens don't interact with cops every day. I know I don't.
My jobs requires working with cops on a daily basis, so I bullshit with them all the time.

Now, excuse me for not clarifying, but I did not mean "you" as in you, Reciprocity, specifically. I meant it generally as in you, the average citizen. In which case, yes, they are worried about "you." Any citizen is a potential criminal, and any one of them could be armed. If they weren't worried about it, then why would they carry weapons at all?
As long as responsible, legal gun owners keep their guns out of the hands of curious kids and criminals, cops don't care what you own, or generally what you do with them.  And cops are citizens too, and guess what, a lot of them are gun enthusiasts.

Officers are more concerned with legal gun owners keeping their weapons securely stored, so that criminals can't get to them.

Any citizen is a potential criminal
yeah, not really.

And they're also most frequently the victims.  The Federalis have already tried to ban "Saturday Night Specials" and priced defensive firearms out of the reach of the poorest people.

How many more defenseless poor people do you want there to be?

Arms should be available to all ranks and classes.  It's not up to us to play with that right, it never has been up to us...yet many a legislator has taken this judgment upon themself and arrogantly oppressed the lawful gun owners, limited themselves and others with enough money or influence to conceal carry (In CA in partiuclar..lke Diane Feinstein).  They think their lives are more important than the average bloke living in the hood.  THere's a gay man in the western addition part of San Francisco who is part of a suit (with the NRA surprisingly) against San Francisco who lives in government housing and claims their ban on gun ownership in those projects is unconstitutional.  He fears not only the rampant crime and shooting will take his life but the danger from..dare I say "Hate" crime against him for being gay.  Surely it's not up to you and I to deny this man his inalienable right to protect himself with a gun.  Or is that what some of you think?  Are those kind of restrictions ok (government housing)?
