I noticed that the PS3 gets hot very easily. Which cooler system is the best? Btw, is it normal the internal cooler being so noisy?
I though the PS3's usually had a pretty good and quiet cooling system while the xbox 360's sucked. Anyone who owns one comment?
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.
Both my 360 and PS3 get quite hot.max wrote:

I have my PS3 sitting on edge, and while I don't typically feel around it for the heat it puts off the few times that I have it was surprisingly cool.
Does it sit in open air on a hard surface?

My PS3 is sitting on a hard surface, but I don't use it sitting on the edge. I have a cat.

OnTopic: Can you even get after-market coolers for PS3's?
A good idea would be a notebook cooler!
A friend has an x-box 360. When he played the latest GTA, his graphics would be laggy and choppy. He put a fan on it after pulling it out of his entertainment unit. It worked for less than a week. Then it got the red circle of death.
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something. - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.
There are external coolers.
The best and cheapest way is to have the console off the ground. Sitting on top of a grilled shelf away from the wall.

Usually less dust is better?sergeriver wrote:

I don't see what you are getting at....why would dust be more of a problem if it isn't touching anything?
Mine runs pretty cool. I have it horizontally on a hard surface.max wrote:

I put the PS3 in a cabinet coz I have a cat, an 9 months baby and that way I can be sure the PS3 won't become a toy for them. The cabinet has room, but I noticed that the PS3 gets hot in it. Hence my question about coolers for the PS3.VicktorVauhn wrote:

I'm not sure, I've had it standing up since December 06 and I haven't had a problem. If anything, open up the cabinet when you play, so that there is airflow when it's on, then close it off when you're done (I have to do this with my Onkyo receiver because it get's mega hot). I think Sony did a good job providing adequate cooling for the PS3, but I am curious if any of you have any suggestions for dust removal.
I'm not talking putting it into Service mode that was discussed some months ago. I'm thinking canned air would do some good, but I'd want to make sure I'm blowing the dust out, instead of pushing it further in.

Remember Me As A Time Of Day
I open the cabinet while playing, but it gets hot, not to the point to shut down, but it still is a concern. If you touch the cabinet is hot too. The room of this cabinet is about 10 inches wider than the PS3 each side, so if you put the system in the middle you get 5 inches a side. Though I leave it on the left, since the vents are in the right and front.

If you've had it a few months do this to clear any dust etc out.
Failing that get it out of the cabinet, it won't be doing the cooling any favours no matter how big it is, or buy a notebook cooler as has been said, that'd probably work.
Or cut a hole in the back of you cabinet and add an exhaust fan, silent one around 30CFM would be plenty to clear any warm air and not add to any noise, mount it about 2/3rds up the back of the cabinet. I'm assuming PS3s have USB ports on the back or somewhere else out of the way (never poked around the back on one so I really don't know) so you can bodge a fan to be powered by that without any trouble, wiring guides are all over the net, just Google for USB wiring instructions.

if you have it in a cabinet I'm not sure even a cooler would help.
So, I leave it outside and let the cat or the baby play with it, lol.jsnipy wrote:

How big is your cat? The PS3 is pretty substantial in weight.sergeriver wrote:

It's medium, a Siamese, but he's a mf. And the baby is a hazard too.jsnipy wrote:

Siamese are smart cats. I'd worry more about him logging onto your account and flaming your friends list more than chewing through the cords.sergeriver wrote:

Yeah, it's a bad idea to have either the PS3 or 360 in a cabinet, they just get way too hot too fast. But comparatively, the PS3 is whisper vs the 360, you might want to pull it out and see if it quiets down when it's not roasting in it's own heat.
