Here's the deal:

I just built my self a new rig and pretty much everything is working fine, except the sound. I'm a using Vista Home Premium 64-bits, so I know this may cause problems, but there must be someway to make it work. I have an Abit IX38 QuadGT motherboard that supports Realtek HDA-sound.

The problem is that I can't listen to music or any sounds from media players etc, but the "OS sounds" (i.e the "ding" sound when you click something that is not clickable) are there and I can also hear the stereo speaker test sound in the Realtek HDA configuration menu. Although this only works when I plug in my headphones in the back panel (I/O plate) - in the front panel nothing at all happens, Realtek doesn't even recognize that I plugged in my headphones.

I checked in BIOS to see that the sound device is enabled, and it is.
I think that either there's a hardware problem, although it seems to work fine. Or, there's a problem with driver compatibility for my Vista 64-bit OS.

What do you guys think? Have any solutions?

Look for a setting somewhere to enable AC'97 audio.

But I want HD audio, I guess it's worth a shot though.

Well in Winamp for instance you need to set up primary sound driver in the output settings. Try that if you use Winamp and see what happens.

I think I fixed the problem, and as usual it's always a lot simpler than you might think at first. all I did was click something in the Sound configuration about "S/PDIF pass-through". I think it has to do with digital sound, so the problem was probably that I had the computer set for digital sound when I didnt have any digital in or outputs.

Although I still have a problem with the sound input on the frontpanel. Do you guys know a way to solve that?

Are you sure you connected front panel connectors correctly?

Pretty sure, but I can try changing the HDA-cable for AC'97. That might solve it. (I still want the HDA-sound though...)

But now I'm going out for a jog, so I'll change that when I get back.

With my case AC97 and HD audio cables were separated.

Alright, everything is good now . what I had done was that I plugged in the HDA 10-pin(9-pin) connector on the top 5(4) pins only, and missed the other 5 below. I corrected that and now it's all good!
