Mandela taken off US terror list

"US President George W Bush has signed a bill removing Nelson Mandela and South African leaders from the US terror watch list, officials say. Mr. Mandela and ANC party members will now be able to visit the US without a waiver from the secretary of state. The African National Congress (ANC) was designated as a terrorist organisation by South Africa's old apartheid regime. A US senator said the new legislation was a step towards removing the "shame of dishonouring this great leader"."

So old Nelson is now not a terrorist...were America at war with him up until Bush signed that bill in that case?

The sanctions were not a part of the missile crisis, but it was a sign of the times; trying to use economic power to topple Communist Cubas government. We were very uncomfortable having Cuba so close. Obviously, Cuba needed our income desperately, and the sanctions would bring a quick end to the red prick Castro.

Yeah. Anyway. Why they are still in place is a good question. Laws can develop a whole lot of inertia sometimes; especially ones that were politically or emotionally created.
