It seems everyone is consuming more and more oil, me included.
At what point should the govt step in?

During the last oil crisis speed limits were introduced, CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards for cars were mandated, petrol was rationed.
Oil must be a big factor in most nations trade deficits.

Should the govt do anything to cut consumption by law - which would be painful and unpopular but beneficial for most consuming nations.
Or just sit back and let the market decide the price as the oil goes up in smoke? The rich don't notice, the poor can't travel)
A middle path might be to increase tax and use the money for public mass transit.

And is it right for people to be tooling around in 8MPG Hummers while troops are dying in Iraq?
At what point should the govt say 'sorry mate, maybe you can afford it but the nation can't'

(Dilbert_X's car does ~22MPG according to US figures, 27MPG in Europe - I do ~5,000 miles/yr -> small city surrounded by empty desert )

Stop trading it in dollars.  When it was $100 back in january(ish), I read an article quoting that in terms of Gold, Oil had remained pretty flat for the last decade (if not longer).  Supply and demand is having a bad effect but not $140 a barrel bad.  Trade it in an appreciating currency so as supply and demand begins to actually make a major difference the appreciating currency evens the pain out.  Trading it in dollars is hitting us in a double whamy.

Edit:  Infact triple, those speculators are artificially inflating the value of the Oil aswell.  I think some form of regulation is in need here, as much as am for capitalist ideals, something as crucial as Oil cant be left in the hands of a bunch of traders who are fucking us over with the value of our money let alone this.

oil is too valuable of a resource and strategically important to let the free market run rampant.

we are not only consuming oil at a large rate but also rare earth elements used in the making of LCD displays and computer chips

http://www.asimovs.com/_issue_0806/ref.shtml

they claim that many of these elements will be exhausted on the planet by 2017.

so, it's not just oil

To those who said no, how far are you prepared to go?
Every male 18-35 drafted to garrison Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, invade Russia etc.?
Or is it about time to say people shouldn't be driving F250s and Dodge Rams, or maybe should just be driving less?

Clinton had passed legislation to reduce engine capacity. Bush had to appease one of his campaign funders, GM, so scrapped it. In hindsight yet another brilliant policy decision from the Bush Oil Co/administration.

Isn't the oil companies quite a powerful lobby group in the US?
They certainly make more money than ever before at the moment so I doubt they want to change things...

Regarding $ or € when trading in oil, the already fragile dollar would take a beating that you wouldn't believe.

And I believe Saddam was doing this before the US forces dealt with him.
Iran is doing the same... I wonder... Will the US go there?
Yes they will, and THEN you'll see what high oil prices really are.

EDIT:
On Topic, YES the goverment should do all they can to find alternate energy sources.

Disallow speculating on the Stock Market.  That is primarally been driving up the price of oil;  It has been artificially inflated over the last year.

do you really want the governent to tell you how far you can travel, and what kind of car you have to do it in?

well, I hope it won't be necessary. If anything, there should be regulations on fuel consumption and fuel efficiency, that would allow us to use the little oil we have left more efficiently.

My hope is that the big car manufacturers will soon realize that cars with combustion engines will become useless once the stuff we combust is gone, and develop cars that run on something else, preferably from re-newable energy sources.

I doubt I'll live to see that though ( not because it won't happen, mind you, simply because I'll probably be dead before the world runs out of oil ).

So keep driving those big SUV's, but keep in mind that the price of oil is only going to go up.

One problem I see is that at some point, gas may become to expensive, that the average american worker/taxpayer can no longer afford it to drive to work, or bring the kids to school, etc.
At that point, the government will have to step in, mainly because such a situation would threaten america as a whole.

Until a situation as BSchuss described appears, the only stepping in they should do is funding and promoting advances in alternate sources... electric cars, better hybrids, better biofuels (what happened to those bacteria that eat plastic and shit oil?).
