Why do I get such shitty cell phone coverage?

I live in DC, which is a pretty damn important city. Now, in the main city I get pretty good coverage for the most part. However, at my mom's house which is only a couple minutes away from the city, I get 1 bar of coverage. Not only that, but the call quality is REALLY fucking bad (like, worse than it is normally).

Now I don't live in the sticks (I actually get perfect coverage out in the middle of nowhere), and there aren't any huge scientific research stations or military bases that would cause interference. Verizon is an entire fucking sham; the best coverage in DC my ass. And the call quality is still shit! I'll be talking to someone and the volume fluctuates, and the call is often broken up (as in someone's sentence gets all garbled).

Does this happen to anybody else?

happens to me, my phone works fine at home. but, when I goto my mom's house, I get little to no service. Its sprint's fault. she lives closer to the mountains too.

Simular happens to me. Im in Wales a million miles away, in a town, with Orange and my coverage is inconsistant.

Might be your phone or network, best thing is to check out/compare other peoples signal strength/service in your house.

But I've heard that America can be pretty shit when it comes to mobiles/service providers

I get better coverage near the White House tbh.

All phones at my house get bad coverage; I'll compare with someone who has Sprint or AT&T next time they come over. And yes Mek, our cell phone companies are utter shit. If there's one reason to move to Europe, it's better internet and phone service.

GS, lulz. My mom's neighborhood is as middle class suburban as it gets. The only minorities seem to be my family, some asian family, and the gardeners, housekeepers, and construction men.

edit: I seriously don't think there's a single black family in this neighborhood.

Yep. My house is like that. If you look at my carrier's coverage map, there's a small dead zone that starts in my front yard and ends about halfway through my backyard. I can literally walk 10 feet out my back door and have my signal go from 1 to 4 bars.

They're the spaces between the cell towers. Sometimes they can't build them close enough together to totally close all the gaps. For the company, it doesn't make sense to build a lot of extra towers just to give a few people another bar or two. Makes financial sense, but it sucks for us. I never had a problem in my house with my old carrier, but I couldn't get a signal at work. Now it's the other way around.

No idea, and the only upside to verizon is noone steals your phone because it is useless (:

all there phones are so ugly and fat, even the envy is a fatass, and then theres the voyager, still a fatass, and way to expensive.
Ive got the one and only good verizon phone, my alias (: man tiny and a full keyboard is sexy and durable
