The U.S. has done the least among the world's eight largest economies to address global warming, a study released Thursday found.

The G-8 Climate Scorecards 2008, released Thursday ahead of next week's gathering of the Group of Eight on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, also found that none of the eight countries are making improvements large enough to prevent temperature increases that scientists think would cause catastrophic climate changes. The gathering includes the heads of states of the U.S., Japan, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada and Russia.

Regine Guenther, director of the World Wildlife Fund Climate Change Program in Germany, told reporters in the German capital that G-8 leaders should commit to reducing emissions in their countries 40 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050.The scorecard ranked Britain as the developed nation that has done the most to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and reach targets set by the Kyoto Protocol. France and Germany are close behind. Germany was praised for its investment in renewable energy.

The study criticized low energy efficiency in the U.S., but said there was hope in legislation under consideration by Congress and initiatives led by non-governmental groups.

It's funny how everybody picks on the bandwagon of blaming India and China. Blame India for rising global prices of rice, despite the fact that India doesn't import any.

Blame India for rising price of gas, despite the fact that a 1.2 billion strong India (20% of the world population) consumes about 2.7% of the world oil annually, something similar to Canada's annual consumption of 2.7% (for a country of 33million, roughly 2/3rds the size of Greater Mumbai).

Here's some interesting articles about China re: polluting the Yellow River (and other environmental stuff).  There's a quote in this issue saying "Americans blaming China for global warming is like a crack addict blaming his drug dealer" <--- I thought that was appropriate.

My thought is much like my thoughts on the "OMG the US economy isn't going to be #1 soon"!!!  It doesn't matter if your first or second or tenth.  You are on the list.

Some highlights:
-Water has always been precious in China, a country with roughly the same amount of water as the United States but nearly five times the population.
-...hastens the advance of deserts that now swallow up a million acres of grassland each year.
-...50 percent of the Yellow River is considered biologically dead—have led to a spike in cases of cancer, birth defects, and waterborne disease along their banks. Pollution-related protests have jumped....
-....the World Bank calculates that environmental damage robs China of 5.8 percent of its GDP each year
-...supporting 20 percent of the world's population with just 7 percent of its fresh water
-Beijing is still addicted to growth. The economic boom has lifted hundreds of millions of Chinese out of poverty....
-....alarming rise in cancer rates across China since 2005—19 percent in urban areas and 23 percent in the countryside

First of all, I think you should start improving and helping on YOUR country first before you bash another country, let them fix it themself, you on the other hand help YOUR country.
I been to Shanghai and Beijing and my dad's village that is 1 hour away from Guangzhou and its not so polluted over then, then it is in some areas in America, so basically every country has its ups and down, before you say something about another country you should look at yours first.

Yeah but your dad lives in a mud and grass hut, so seriously, how much energy and pollutants does it produce other than the extreme odor of human feces due to a non-existent sewer system?  It's like trying to compare apples and oranges you know.

Is it percentage based population? Because the UK is a hell of a lot smaller than the US.

I'm sure a study like this one would take into account population size and the like.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.

And oh yea ..

The study also analyzed — but did not rank — five of the world's fastest growing economies: Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa. "These countries cannot be measured with the same ruler as industrialized countries," the statement said.
That was nice of them.

The US congress has passed legislation to ban incandescent bulbs by 2012. They have repeatedly denied exploratory drilling for fossil fuels, and have mandated a 40% increase in fuel efficiency. I'm not saying the US is leading the way. But:

China and India also have huge concentrations of paddy fields, in other words, a shitload of methane production going up into the atmosphere.
