Shooting Jupiter

Well trying to at least. I just grabbed my Canon, tripod, and my 75-300mm lens.

For reference the following two screenshots are from stellarium

My attempts:
I couldn't get much detail out of Jupiter. But you can clearly see the moons.

Planets are extremely hard to shoot. The long exposure need to gather the light in conjunction with the fact that they move across the sky sucks.

As you can see my settings were all over the place

oops.. little bit of a plane this time

The star on the left side is HP 95077@ 186.16 light years away.

I also took a shot at Antares. It looks reallly red in this next shot.. it's basically untouched.

I need a better telelens. I have a cheap 75-300mm right now. It looks a lot better through my scope. I'm going to try the webcam thing again Saturday night.

When I first read the thread title, I thought you were making a thread about the nuking of Jupiter you had in your sig a while back.

Are you mounting the camera to the eyepieces or the OTA for the zoomed in shots of jupiter? And what are you using for tracking?

Simple spur of the moment deal. Canon XTi + tripod + 75-300mm lens. It's not tracking which is why I said "The long exposure need to gather the light in conjunction with the fact that they move across the sky sucks." I won't be able to properly get a shot until I track while shooting. I will be piggybacking on my scope when I do that. It tracks. (Meade ETX-125PE)

Yea Antares is huge. Look at our tiny sun .

Betelgeuse will be cool when it goes supernova. It will be visible in the daytime.

Also:

I just downloaded that stellarium program you linked at the top of your post and I must say it is .

It's free and is better than a previous night sky program that I paid $50 for.

Yes. I look for the red object around his belt (not to be confused with Mars ). In fact it could have already went supernova. The light just hasn't gotten here yet. The name is derived from the arabic word "bat al-dshauzâ", which means the giant's shoulder.

They are similar. The mass of a hypergiant star is very hard to determine. This is due to the fact they are constantly having outburst. I've seen some estimates as low as 15 Mo RSG for VY Canis Majoris. The radius (also hard to determine) of VY Canis Majoris is 600Ro. Anteres is approximately 700ro. If you put either one of these stars where our sun is they would extend out past Saturn.
