like you said, no brainer

It is quite ironic that your version of the American dream is being presented to you in the form of a Mexican called Tony but I say take the new job and laugh yourself all the way to the bank. Congrats man.ATG wrote:
I was offered a job yesterday making 75k +- per year to start, plus a potential buyout of one of my ventures ( www.copperworks.net ).
I recently hired a manager who is capable of running my other business in my absence. So I could retain 100% ownership but only draw a tiny salary from my company while it gets back on it's feet and in black, while making around $1500.00 per week from my new job, plus get as much as 200k in buyout to sell my customer database, website and tooling and specialty machinery. I am now one month behind on my mortgage, but have 40k in pending receivables plus 30-50k in the works. I may go without substantial pay until the end of this year. Feast or famine baby.
Seems like a no brainer.
My boss would be a guy named Tony. A one time illegal alien. A Mexican flag hangs in the shop.
Advice please.

I've always said I never had a problem with immigrants (even illegal ones) coming to my country if they are trying to make a real go of it...hell, I'd take an enterprising immigrant over a lazy Irishman any day of the week.usmarine2 wrote:

He is naturalized now.kylef wrote:
What would be the worst that could happen if the Government found out Tony was an illegal alien? Deportation and no threat to company? Or ...
Either way, no harm in at least trying
I think you should do it ATG. Keep the business too. Good luck man. Also, you should check out Dave Ramsey. He, helped me trim off some extra spending/expenses.ATG wrote:

I'm not a nine to five guy, so I like being my own boss. It's up to you. But I would take the risk and continue by myself. I dunno, ask for a loan to solve your financial issues until the wheel is again in motion.
Agreed... At this point, it should be clear that part of why illegals can rise so fast is because they don't usually have to pay income taxes.usmarine2 wrote:

I was offered 5k for the site four years ago. It's about the database of companies and customers. As well as foundry tooling;Zimmer wrote:
Well, for one, I doubt you would get anything for the site; but as you said, it's a "no-brainer". Go for it. You only live once, may as well do everything there is to do.

You have to be careful about the contract you sign. He could let you go less than a year later. Remember that you could put anything in a contract. $75k per year with a fixed buy out your management services contract if he decides to let you go. OR a guaranteed fixed minimum in wages that are to be paid, say minimum 2 years pay at $75K. Just negotiate and ask, you won't get it if you don't ask. Also remember that you have the knowledge about how to start one of these businesses up and that is worth a lot so watch out for clauses that seek to restrict your ability to open a similar business if he lets you go. That is another thing you could horse trade, a restriction on opening another similar business for two years with a minimum 2 year guaranteed contract or whatever you can get.Dilbert_X wrote:
Seems reasonable to me.
How much job security can you negotiate in?
I mean, he could take you on at 75k/yr only to find your Spanish is not up to scratch and have to let you go after a week

Perhaps I can present an insiders view; pick one illegal alien a month and interview him or something.Burwhale the Avenger wrote:
I would go for it mate. I am really glad to hear life is cutting you a break ( and a pretty big one at that). Good for you.
It will be pretty quiet round here if there are no immigration posts though
