What about changing stop signs and lights to "yield" signs after say, 11pm at night when the traffic is nill. You would save a lot of energy if people didn't have to stop at intersections at night.
Give people more of an incentive to drive energy-friendly cars. For example, I don't know if it's anywhere besides New York/Long Island, but here, the HOV lane has been open to "Clean Energy Pass" vehicles (or whatever it's called).
The big problem with solar or wind powered generators no one wants them to ruin their view , On long Island the local power provider wants to put a windmill farm 12 miles off shore and people are complaining it will ruin their view of the ocean . As if you can see anything 12 miles away without binoculars .
Mixing asphalt with white rocks would increase reflection. Pure black asphalt absorbs heat.
Speaking of asphalt...how about we stop using it and use cement exclusively? That would save massive amounts of oil (primary ingredient of asphalt) and result in longer-lasting road surfaces, as well.

Geothermal is one of the best ideas. The source will never run out. And its pretty simple technology. Its also base load power ( if done right).
I even read about some research that put gel filled tiles in shopping centres. People walking about the shopping centres moved the gel around which provided power to power the centre.
Sorry I cant find the source for that one.
