Should I upgrade to a 4870?

I have two questions for this.

#1 Will an ATi 4870 be worth the upgrade from a 8800gts?

#2 I think my motherboard is PCI-E 1.0 will this hold back the potential of the 4870? (by how much?)

Here are my current system specs.

Mobo: Asus P5N32-E Sli
CPU: E6600 I think
RAM: 4GB 6400
OS: XP-Pro 32bit SP2 (I know I have 4gb ram in a 32 bit system)
GPU:^^8800GTS 640MB

EDIT: I realized my board is nVidia. Will this work with a 4870? I don't intend to use crossfire.

The PCIE 1.0 slots shouldn't be an issue, and neither should the NV board. It will still give you a massive boost over your 8800.

8800GTS is still a very good card. Are there any games you can't play with nice FPS? PCI 1.1 won't hold you back. Is your CPU OCed?

Crysis holds me back. CPU is not overclocked.

I might change to a larger monitor. My current is a 19" and can run up to 1280 x 1024. Being able to run smoothly in higher resolutions would be nice.

Unless there are any other GPUs soon to be released that may be worth waiting for. The 4870 just seemed like good value for money and has had good reviews.

There is a 9800GTX+ in a week or two, and the 4870X2 in August. Prices I believe are expected to be $230 and $499 respectivly.

However, the 9800GTX+ is only supposed to beat the 4850, the 4870 would still be a quicker card.

4870X2 is a high end part.

Despiration by the looks of it, Nvidia where over-confident and released too many cards with little performance increase (Apart from the GTX200 series).

This is because ATi did not correct the industry who where expecting a 480SP card. Even by AMD's own slides, the 4850 was only supposed to be around the speed of an 8800GT, and the 4870 was about the 9800GTX speeds. So Nvidia thought to them self, NAHA, we will release a 9800GTX+ to beat the 4870, and for those who have even more muniez, we will sell a GTX 260 and 280 for a shit load and rake in more cash.

When it became apparant that the 4850 was handing the 9800GTX's ass to it, and the 4870 was beating the GTX 260 and just shy of the 280 performance, this has caused Nvidia to drop the prices of everything like a rock and is forcing them to get the 9800GTX+ out quicker and cheaper than they would otherwise have done.

Was essentially ATi keeping quiet about the 4series true potential that has caused the current situation. You can beat Nvidia would of made the 260 and 280 a hell of a lot better if they had any clue what ATi was coming up with.

Can't wait for 4870X2

If you have a lot of spare cash flying around, go ahead and upgrade. Otherwise, the 8800GTS is perfectly fine. I have friends who play Oblivion on Dells outfitted with 8600's.
