thoughts on the rig below - thinking of buying in the next few weeks.

Q6600 95W Edition + Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme + OCZ Thermal Paste + ArtiClean
Asus P5E x38 or Asus P45 P5Q ?
2 x 2 GB Corsair Dominator 1066mhz
500GB Seagate 32mb cache HD
Samsung DVD-RW
Corsair 650W TX

To be used with a thermtlaek kandalf, x-fi extreme gamer and atm a 7900GS til the 4870 prices drop.

cheers.

I would dump the X38 unless you are fairly certain you will be going Crossfire.  P45 will still give you your PCI 2.0 slot for one card and save yourself a bit of cash.

By the time you get a crossfire setup you will probably be looking to nehalm and a new mobo anyway (X58).

Ok my suggestion will be entirely different. From the reviews I've read X38/48 OCes better than P45 and has full pci-e bus speed. I think you made a really good component selection Mitch except the CPU. Q9xxx series OCs better and are fairly cheap. But if it was me, I'd still go with a dual core.

* 500GB Seagate 32mb cache HD *

I dont know the specs on that seagate, but maybe take a look at the samsung spinpoint F1 series which are supposed to be some of the fastest 7200rpm drives.

If you want to save that £40. If crossfire is more important, then go X38 aka P5E.

So the spinpoint is better even though half the cache and cheaper?

Yes. Everything above 16MB cache is a waste of...well cache.

I would go for a Gigabyte board, and personally I went for the seagate 500GB, never had a problem and it works a treat.
