An interesting graphic on the price of gas throughout the country (US, if that wasn't painfully obvious).

Graph

I had always known that I lived in an expensive area (North/Central California), but this graph opened my eyes as to how much more expensive. This doesn't even give an actual price for the west coast because it is so damn volatile and unstable. So if you want to complain about gas prices, take some perspective.

And if you live in the midwest, just stfu. You have it good.

Bu-freakidy-hu, the highest gas price in the US is $4.42 per gallon

The LOWEST gas price in Iceland is $9.5 per gallon, $10 for diesel.

Funny how I didn't say anything about Europe. At all. Nothing. It is a common fact that Europe has higher gas prices, and I don't want this to turn into another transatlantic price war.

And if the highest price in the entire US is $4.42, please tell that to the Shell down the street selling for $4.80. I don't think he got the memo.

Not to mention that it would be difficult to gauge the actual impact of the price of gas without taking into account how much one drives, fuel economy of car, mass transit options, various government taxes on gas, additives, etc.

I didn't really realize the impact that "clean burning fuel" legislation had on the price of gas in California.  Wow!

Too bad it doesn't separate state & city tax from the fuel.  Doesn't Cali have a large gas tax?

Well, I'm in Missouri, and I've been to California quite a bit, and to tell you the truth I'm never disappointed to come back home.  California may be a fun place to live if you're rich, but its funny how little being a millionaire will get you in California, as opposed to what you could have in, say, Missouri or Texas.

And if the US ever gets around to seriously utilizing ethanol (like building up the necessary infrastructure to support ethanol production from non-corn sources), you may just wish you lived a little close to the good ol' midwest.  Just my two cents.

I wouldn't want to live in California, but...  I wouldn't want to live in most light green states either.  South Carolina is pretty boring (with the exception of Myrtle Beach).  There are plenty of good yellow states on that map.

What, are foreign cars banned in the US or something...? Surely there are German, French, Swedish, Japenese, Korean and Skoda in the US too?

And I did once drive straight accross Iceland, took 2 days of driving, the 100km field of lava where you average about 10 or 20 km/h really slows you down.

And? Fact is, that if you were to pay in dollars here, one gallon would cost $9.5.

We are taxed to shit here.

The main purpose of the gas tax is to pay for the maintenance of the roadways. Therefore, we have, by far, the highest has tax because we have more roadway than some states have actual land. The fact that this money is often pillaged for other things (Social Security style) is a whole other heated point.

In fact, we're paying 63.9 cents per gallon of gas.

Breaks down into 6% Sales Tax. 1.25% county tax. 1.2 cpg state UST fee. plus local sales tax.

Pisses me off that you all get such cheap prices.  Couple weeks ago I was at Annapolis and I remember seeing $3.50 a gallon at a gas station on the way there from the airport.  Just about drove me nuts.

You said it, not me.  I tend to like the Mediterranean climate and the beach.

For what it's worth, I've been to Minnesota (St. Croix River area) and it was beautiful.  Wouldn't want to live there right now though.
