I work as a Optical Lab Technitian at the moment with pay around £700 ($1400) a month, im 19 and i have been there for around a year and i was talking with the guys today about the future prospects for me in this line of work and i have discovered that theres not much in terms of job openings elsewhere like specsavers, D&A and optical express surfacing labs. The job itself is pretty skilled but its not a common place to find somewhere where i work right now. The company i work for is a small family company so i cant really move up and stuff.

The boss has told us we are getting a pay rise but the deadline for the rise has come and gone and im wondering if i ever will earn much more than i am now, my partner who does exactly the same as me gets exactly £1000 ($2000) a month but shes been there for a few years.

Ive been looking for a new job lately with better pay and future psospects but with the credit crunch theres a chance i could find a job but then get laid off, but staying here at my current work i will definately keep my job.

What should i do? Keep my shitty paid job and hope for a crappy pay rise of which i know will not happen or look for alternative work as a less skilled worker but better money and chances of being laid off due to the credit crunch....or a 3rd option to find a job for over the weekend to boost my monthly income?

Third option.

You make more monies and you still can fall back on your current job.

Also sell some shit if you can.

From personal experience, talk to your boss to see the pay situation - it'll probably end up that your boss is more embarrassed about answering than you were about questioning.

I did, and did a bit of college and i found this place with the qualifications i had which where ok.

The problem is, is its not a common line of work so future prospects are bleek.

I always cant help but see jobs like that as a trap. What seems like good money now may not in 20 years, especially when like you said there isn't a ton of places to go from there...

Basically... moar school. I am 24 and still grinding at the books... I didn't really even start progressing towards my current degree until I was older then 19... It sucks, but get past the general stuff and find something that really interests you and its not unbearable...

I wouldn't say you have too much to worry about with regards to the credit crunch. I would say find a 3rd job and boost your monthly income while also looking for something more permanent.

In my current situation I'm working for a stockbrokers, i think i have a lot more to worry about with regards to the credit crunch/entire economy which is why I'm looking for a job at the same time too.

You can go and do a degree in optometry.  Unless humans get a nice dose of gamma radiation from some cosmic radiation and mutate overnight people will aways have eyes, and therefore it's guaranteed work.

1 year = 12 months = 48 weeks...

48 * 1400 = 67200

Even if you were talking every 2 weeks then that is 24 paychecks
24 * 1400 = 33600

still not right....

You have always said how happy you are in your job and look forward to lunchtime kick abouts with fellow staff, thats whats important with your job and money is the bonus - if only eh?

Who can predict whats the best move for you?

I would stick with what you have, you work for a family business and I am sure they are very loyal to their staff.  All there taxes and rates would of gone up this year and that would of taken some of your rise away, if not all.  You are guaranteed next week/month to get paid, not as much as what you would like but its guaranteed.  With that guarantee you and the Mrs can plan ahead, you have a budget to work for.  People would bite your arm off for that in this day and age due to financial un-stability (for want of a better word).

Option 3 is a toughie, whats the point of you and the Mrs working hard planning to get a house or rent or whatever if you both work 9-5, Mon-Fri and come Sat you dont see each other as your having to bring in more money, some relationships crumble over that but if you both know why your doing it might make things stronger between you.

What would I do? (work for my family, pay has always been shitty, its only now in my 17th year I am finally almost happy with what I take home)...............I would stick at this present time.  I wouldnt look elsewhere for work because what if something did get offered to you?

Prolly hard with that amount of cash, but I'd suggest either saving up for Uni or trying to take a step into a more progressable field that still has something to do with optics, etc. Something pretty off, but that you could still use your current skills in. Or just win the lottery.
