Can someone tell me some decent video editing software?

Preferably free but if it's good enough doesn't have to be.

I'm making a few videos soon and I don't want it to be a headache.

Adobe After Effects makes Vegas looks like shit as far as creating good effects and whatnot goes, but Vegas is still very good, is much easier to use and does basic effects far more quickly and it's much better for audio work than AE is too, so they both have their plus points.

As already said, Sony Vegas or Adobe after effects. Windows Movie Maker is a crappy but free alternative

There's always the discontinued Avid Free Edition, if you want to download a clandestine version. Their fault for sticking it on the web. Premiere/AE is still easier to use, though.

and premier elements by adobe is around a 100 bucks and very good

Thanks for all the recommendations guys, I went with Sony Vegas Pro in the end.

It's working well enough for what I'm doing in the meantime, so I'm happy.
