Sen Jim Webb (D-VA) has taken himself out of contention for Obama's VP

Webb would have given the Obama ticket some serious national security chops...and possibly my vote.

Does anyone here see any implications for this? Is Webb holding out for a Cabinet position (SecDef)?

Well, McCain meets half of your criteria anyway.

There won't be a Republican on Obama's ticket. Maybe in his Cabinet, but not on the ticket.

Same could be said for McCain and Democrats.

seriously, I have never given this much thought, but would it be theoretically possible for a democratic pres. candidate to nominate a republican for his VP ?

I mean, is it actually ruled out by some written law or election regulation ?
Or has simply no one tried it before ?

Because as Poseidon has said, that'd be real bipartisanship.

Well, Lincoln had Johnson (who was a dem) as his VP in the 1860's. I don't think it's been outlawed in latter years, but I'm not sure.

It's not very probable in this day and age. The vice president was formerly just the presidential candidate who was second in terms of electoral votes, but the 12th Amendment changed it so they are elected with the president.

Uggh ... there's a lot of Dem's in Virginia I love (e.g. Mark Warner), but I absolutely despise Webb ... he may seem like a quality candidate to those who live outside of Virginia, but he's mostly useless to those of us for whom he represents.

Why wouldn't it impact your vote? It's a ticket, not an individual. What would the last 8 years have been like without Cheney around?

Actually, in this election, I'm voting based on the VP selection. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse than the selection between Kerry and Bush in 2004, we get an absolutely horrible choice between a used car salesman and a geriatric non-visionary.

Besides, theres a good chance that within a year of being in office, we have enough racist psychos in America (some join BF2s from time to time) that someone will attempt and perhaps succeed at assassinating Obama ... and, in the long-shot chance that McCain is elected, within a year someone will find him mentally snapped, rocking in a fetal position under the Resolute Desk yelling out "dammit, the VC are everywhere ... ".

And, then the VP will be President.

So, yeah, I'm voting based on the VP selection.

Wes Clark is a no for his comment (though right and taken completely out of context) about McCain last week.

Webb is a terrible choice as he is still in his first term thus bringing the no-experience argument to validated light.

Richardson is a Clinton stooge so no thanks.
