Does anyone have experience with these types of media players?

I'm on the verge of buying one so I thought I'd ask if someone has one of these or any exp. on these.

It's a too long way from the office to the livingroom so just a few cables won't do the trick, since I'd have to run to another room to click pause/play/stop/rewind when I get more beer, so that option is no-no. And I don't want to start jerking around by connecting that damn laptop to the system ever again.

Buffalo Linktheater HD

DViCO TViX HD M-7000A

Popcorn Hour A-100

If you have something else than these three, feel free to bring it to the table. Basically my only requirement is HDMI connection for quality sound and picture.

Once I went wireless cos i didn't wanted to bother placing cables but then i went with a wired router anyway. I had such a poor connection (signal was poor-2 floors) and I'm happy. I took me an hour to place cables but no worries anymore.

media players are too limiting in the containers/codecs they can play and in the output format (many can't do 1080p) IMO. I vastly prefer an inexpensive HTPC over those machines

Ditto. Plus HTPCs make great download PCs and servers. Having the ability to ssh into your network when on the road can be really useful

That's what I used to have before moving to a new place. Now I don't have the room for another box in the livingroom ( the feng shui would be damaged ) Besides 1080i is good enuff for TV shows.

None of those units had HDMI in. Some of them did however have hard drives, but I couldn't find their specs. The last thing you want to do is drop a few hundred dollars on a piece of equipment and have your playback stutter. Good ideas in theory but I'm skeptical when it comes to performance.

The DVico TVIX product looked cool (mkv was a nice touch).. but then again: Save Money and time...DONT BUY

Don't have experience with any of those, I suggest listening to Kmarion when it comes to that kind of stuff...

However, I've got a 32" Sharp Aquos TV hooked up with HDMI to my PS3 and Cable box, and holy shit is it worth it. Picture quality is incredible. Hell, even my 360 which is hooked up via HD component cables (I have the 2006 one, no HDMI port on it) has incredible picture quality.

Notice Regarding Injunction

Regrettably, the Court of Appeals has decided not to stay the injunction in the CSIRO v. Buffalo et al litigation during the appeal period. Although Buffalo is confident that the final decision in the appeal will be favorable and that the injunction will be lifted, Buffalo is presently unable to supply wireless LAN equipment compliant with IEEE 802.11a and 802.11g standards in the United States until that decision is issued. Data Transfer Rates 100 Mbps, should be fine for what you are using (1080i). A typical HDMI cable can rate from 2.93 to 14+ gbps. So if you use hdmi you are just taking advantage of the convenience of having one cable. If you were to try 1080p with uncompressed audio you would have some trouble. The LT-H90WN doesn't have any storage?

You're right. No storage. What I had in mind was to use the WLAN through my Telewell to my desktop to get the files to play that way. Or to buy an external hard drive and connect it to the thingie. A WD My Book Essential 500GB is on sale for 68€ at a place here. An external would be a good choise eventually so I could take it with me when I go by my friends. Decisions decisions...

edit. The LAN version of the Buffalo (with HDMI) is 148,90€. Add a drive to that and the price is just less than 20€ more. And this model (LT-H90LAN) would be available next week. Think I might try out this one tho the two nasty personal reviews. I mean the amount of negative vs. no feedback is more than clear. Ppl rarely go awol on the interwebs about something positive if they are not forced to speak their mind, when if something negative happens ppl are all over the place yelling "all their products and models are shit" even if it would be the first product they've bought from the manufacturer. I've been talking to this kind of ppl and believe me, most of them are plain morons. One of the best/worst feedbacks I got from a lady who had bought a DVD player. So it got a malfunction. No worries, normal procedure guarantee and all. I call her and advise her to take it to the store where she bought it or to take it to the closest official repairpoint. She first refused and wanted a refund. I was like wtf, on what basis!? Because it's broken and she had lost all her trust in all the brands products. At the point I was almost laughing. I asked her if she'd had the thing already replaced and what other products she had from the brand. She said it was the first one, no changes, no nothing and it was the first product she had. I said that how in the world can you have lost all her trust then? I almost went overboard listening to her stupidity when she actually said it: Well 100% of the brand I've bought have been malfunctioning, so yeah I want a refund. OMFG. My ears bled. No dice. Take it to the repairshop on go wrestle with the store you bought it from. The importer have to do no more. Bye.

Went a little sidetrack there (how come this always happens when I'm on a roll with the keyboard?? ) on the project itself. But my conclusion is that this might be a working piece of machinery afterall. Yeah, I'll be your testdummy and go buy that thing if nothing else comes in front before it's available

More edits.
Now I got an email saying the WLAN version should be available at the end of the month. Go figure...

You are right. People who are happy with their products are not as motivated to get on the interwebz and leave feedback.

edit.
O rite. I put that piece of entertainment on a USB memstik and plugged it in the front of the mediaplayer. Time will tell if the sound and pic quality improves when the HDMI kicks in. So far no problems.

Hmm. Tried to watch Juno and Storm of the century on it using a 4GB Kingston memstick. Juno had some major lag effect and Storm of the century had no sound Got some other movies too but I still need to get that external 500GB harddrive and my Onkyo.
