My brother is going to uni 1st year this sept. and needs a laptop, so we are prolly going sometime this week.  He doesn't know much about specs, so he asked me to help him choose one.  I know a little bit, but not enough, so i come to the Gods that are the tech people

so he doesn't want a mac, thats for sure.  He's going into business school, so he'll need office mostly.

questions:

XP or vista?
2 gb or 4 gb of ram?
video card?
HP or dell or other?

what would be the ideal laptop for him? help please

thanks

Just make sure it doesn't have an 8400,8500, 8600 or anything else in the nVidia GeForce 8-series other than an 8800 because it will stop working extremely soon.

4 gb.
8500/8600 is good if he's not a gamer, if not less..even a 7150 is good if he's not gaming.
Dell's decent, but Toshiba, Sony, or Acer are better.

stop working, die, shit the bed

Whatever term you want to use, it's gonna happen to the laptop version of those cards and eventually the desktop version too, which I have.

fuuuuuck... so what's left to get?  Laptops with 8800 series cards are considerably more expensive...

WTF? A laptop with an 8800 is way fucking OTT.

I suggest one of the Dell XPS' from the Dell site.

13.3" size and has alot of power.

It's what I intend on getting next year.

Processor power and RAM is always something you should look for in a laptop more than anything else, and also battery life. Graphics comes 4th, for me (In a laptop).

Yeah, more RAM can actually increase the battery life, if only by a few minutes:

Still very cool that it works that way.

I bought this laptop about a month ago and i love it.  i personally recommend this laptop, it can eat up anything you throw at it.  cept maybe crysis.  great price for what you get, plus you can upgrade the processor later if need be.  pretty much comes loaded.   the only thing is it isnt too "mobile" at over 9lbs.

What's your budget and what's he going to do with it besides college stuff?

The HP Pavillion HDX9494NR 20.1" looks pretty sweet is you want to shell out the cash for it. Lots of space, fair processor, fingerprint reader, TV tuner, 4GB RAM, 8800M, Blu-Ray and a HD screen.

If it weren't for the fact that 9x00m's and DDR3 are to feature in laptops this month, I'd have bought it last week (as it is, I might still go with it if the price drops, even though it's pretty feature-rich for 1.5k).
