Hmm I'm stumped on this one.

I've got 2gb of ram as per my sig. When I first built the rig I could run a custom stress test with prime95 and get 100% usage on both cores and memory.

But now I get 100% on both cores but only 80% on memory. No matter what I do I can't get it over 80%. I can open every application and game I have installed and it still won't go over 80%.

Is this bad ram? Or does there exist software that reserves a section of your ram for itself at all times?

That would be a RAM leak which is bad but can be removed I think if you defragment your RAM.

WHAT you can defragment ram? Will check it out.

I've removed one stick and stressed with one left in. I can get 100%. If I switch them round I can get 100%. So it looks like my system just can't use more than ~1.6gb. I'm running xp sp3 which afaik should be able to handle 3gb...

I don't think that's right, if you mean memory leak as in a program is using too much memory, then if anything he should be using a higher percentage of ram.

And I know you can defragment ram, but as it's volatile, everything is wiped off it when the computer is turned off, so I don't think that would make a difference.

If you say both sticks are ok individually did you try using a different slot each time? or did you put both sticks in the same slot? If the latter, try a different slot.

You could also try using another program to stress the ram and see what happens.

Yup tried all 4 slots same problem. I just seem incapable of using more than 1.6ish GB. Gonna try a reformat I think. If that fails then new ram, and if that fails new mobo then psu
