Americans should make more of an effort to learn a second language, not necessarily Spanish (although Spanish would probably be the most useful in that particular part of the world, almost the whole of central and South America speaks Spanish). Britain and even Ireland are the same, we tend to be quite lazy when we travel abroad, often presuming that the people in the countries we visit will speak our language and not the reverse.
I can speak English, Irish and am currently trying to learn French again.

Learning another language is always positive.
You could ask the same thing in Germany, all of us learn English in school, later French and/or Latin (at least at the Gymnasium - whatever that would be in other countries, but I think we are one of the few countries, that splits its pupils into three different "leveled" schools after elementary school.) But why should we? Cause we lost the war?
Seriously, when learning a language in school you almost always also learn something about the culture. This establishes a certain understanding for the different way of life etc. and this can never be wrong, because it helps to get along with each other.
I would instantly replace the (christian) religious education in schools with e.g. "Cultures and Societies". Children would learn about there own, certainly, but also about the cultures in other countries - hopefully unbiased...
Nobody sais that you would have to learn every language of every major group of immigrants in your country; they want to live here, they have to learn the language - otherwise I would be fluent in Turkish and Russian by now. ^^

I refuse to speak your backwards language if/when I visit your country
Don't most states already require a second language out of high school kids?
At any rate, I've forgotten most of my Spanish. Why? Because I never use it. Most Mexicans I encounter in my field of work have a rudimentary knowledge of English, the ability to understand dramatic gestures and finger pointing...or both. And if one doesn't, the other that is most likely with him probably does.
A lot of them I met are pretty good guys and hard workers, though...unlike some people I've met who were born here but spend 80% of the day complaining about their jobs while they're supposed to be working.
Kinda reminds me of the 1800s, in a way.

Americans who are up to their ears in Mexicans are already resentful that it is becoming harder and harder to communicate with businesses. Some people can't get jobs if they don't speak Spanish. People already think their own language and culture is being displaced, so naturally if someone wants to make Spanish mandatory, they're going to blow up.God Save the Queen wrote:

I wonder if the Swedish don't like having to learn English in order to attend higher education institutions in Sweden
