NEVER CONSUME A SHOT/ALCOHOL WHILE STILL FLAMING!!!
The reasons for "flaming" a shot vary from looking cool, to getting flavors not normally present with straight shots. this technique creates a vacuum between the liquor and you hand, as the flame burns away the oxygen and alcohol fumes, letting you taste the booze W/O the fumes affecting the flavor.
flames can also caramelize the sugars in some liquors changing the flavor.
- pour shot (warm booze works best)
- ignite shot (use a Bic or disposable type lighter as with a zippo type you'll get the lighter fuel taste, and with matches you'll get a sulphur taste)
- quickly place palm of hand to rim of the shot. (YES WHILE IT'S ON FIRE! by sealing the rim, the fire consumes all of the O2 and goes out quick enough that you don't burn your self. don't let the shot burn too long before this step, lest the fire heats the glass to a "searing" temp)
- raise shot, (with hand still tightly pressed to rim of glass) to mouth, remove your hand and take shot in one motion.
