Earlier this week, one of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) top advisers, Carly Fiorina, argued for McCain’s free-market approach to health care by noting that “there are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication” and that many “women would like a choice.”

Q: Earlier this week Carly Fiorina was meeting with a bunch of reporters and talked about it being unfair that insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. And -

McCain: I certainly do not want to discuss that issue. (uneasy laughter)

Q: But apparently you’ve voted against (McCain laughter continues)

    McCain: I don’t know what I voted -

Q: Voted against coverage of birth control, forcing health insurance companies to cover birth control in the past. Is that still your position?

McCain: I’ll look at my voting record on it, but I have, uh, (5 second pause) , I don’t recall the vote right now. But I’ll be glad to look at it and get back to you as to why, I don’t -

Q: I guess her statement was that it was unfair that health insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. Do you have an opinion on that?

McCain: (after 8 second pause) I don’t know enough about it to give you an informed answer because I don’t recall the vote, I’ve cast thousands of votes in the Senate.

Thanks to certain crazy Catholics, this is an issue.  For the rational rest of us, we realize birth control is a necessity of modern life.  The Pope can shove it up his ass.

It was pretty amusing to see McCain stumble on that.

You got it right K-Man.  McCain was afraid to answer that one.

@TURQUOISE:
I do understand that birth control is a necessity of modern life (I even believe that people don't use it as often as they should).  You blame the Church, and the Church say is your fault for improper family planning.  Forcing private insurances to cover.... Think about that.  If you like tons of Government regulation in private business then by all means.. Also who do you think would really pay for that?  You and Me.  What would the follow up question have been?  Should the Feds provide it?  Who pays for that?  It would have been messy.

Finally, viagra is used to treat a medical disorder.  Avoiding Pregnancy in most cases is not.

Bottom line, whether or not you want to have kids You need to pay for it.

I do concur it was funny to see him with the 'deer in headlights' look.
These guys run their handlers from now on before answering anything new (or old to him).  The media are freaking' sharks.

I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Just a note - Birth Control is not completely for people to avoid having babies. It's also to regulate people's periods who are having problems with their "special cycle".

I have no problem using legislation to force insurance companies to cover birth control, because they use legislation all the time to ensure that they don't have to cover as much as they logically should.  It's time consumers fought back some.

For the most part, I wouldn't mind socializing health insurance completely, because the private sector just dicks people over constantly in this particular industry.

In short, I prefer most markets to be privatized, but insurance and healthcare should be socialized.
