I just came across these a few moments ago.
These are images of the first 3 milliseconds after an atomic bomb has blown up.
I don't know why it said milliseconds, and then the title of the pictures is in billions of a second.

Pretty neat.

Did you post those images within three milliseconds of seeing them?  I think there is a prize for that.

How did they get such weird pictures from the explosion?  The first one looks like there is some sort of tractor beam down to earth...

isn't a milli second 1,000,000 of a second?

i believe that's the tower the bomb is placed on when detonated

Maybe I'm nuts, but I think they blew it up over a support beam with ropes attached.

Looks pretty . Science!

Are those lines the tethers holding the bomb into place?

Seriously though, why place it on a tower?  I'm too lazy to look into it further, someone do it for me.

What is the scale of the picture in inches?  Centimeters?  How big is that?

I't bet that tower is 200-300ft tall.

1 millisecond = 1 thousandth of a second

anyway 1,000,000,000 is a billion, not a million.

because nuclear bombs are detonated above the surface of the earth to maximize destruction.  and it's easier to observe the blast without the ground getting in the way.

In the third picture, you can see small silhouettes of trees near the base of the explosion.

No, the caption of the picture said they were Joshua trees.

1 millisecond=1/1,000,000(millionth) of a second   -no it isn't, I'm a retard.

1 millisecond=1/1,000(thousandth) of a second

1 microsecond=1/1,000,000(millionth) of a second

1 nanosecond=1/1,000,000,000(billionth) of a second

I was gonna say they were trees too, but unless that tower was REALLY REALLY high off the ground they are two small.

Either way, that 3rd pick is absolutely wild.

Yeah, StumbledUpon these a while back.

I also had a link to  Wikipedia article outlining the camera used to shoot them.

Well the title of the set of pictures said 1,000,000,000 of a Second, so I used that.
The story said 3 millisecond after the explosion, so I put that in too.

It doesn't really matter if it was 5 milliseconds after the explosion, they are still cool.

Cool pictures, but the whole prefix/failing at math is a bit funnier.
