Here we go...

July 11 (Bloomberg) -- IndyMac Bancorp Inc. became the second-biggest federally insured financial company to fail today after a run by depositors left the California mortgage lender short on cash.
The Pasadena-based thrift's failure is second in size only to the 1984 failure of Continental Illinois Bank.

Like me, you mean.

I failed to foresee a 85% sudden drop in income.
Shoot me please.

People have lost the distinguishment between "afford" and "able to buy"

Amex works.

It's no wonder considering California has more foreclosures than 40 other states combined.

I just hope that all the foreclosures and crap in California doesn't push the Mexicans further north.  We need to build a wall along the Nevada and Oregon borders with California.

Poorly regulated free markets for the lose. As George Soros said - totally free markets are as poor an ideology as Marxism because they fail to account for the nature of man, invariably greedy. Irresponsible mortgage lenders couldn't give away cheap money fast enough in their bleeding the golden goose dry.

The word that comes to my mind is stupid, but yes, you are entirely correct

the idiots who lack the foresight to see what they're doing ruin it for the rest of us
the system is cut throat, but it isn't cut throat enough to keep the incompetents out - now if bankruptcy became a little more serious maybe it would keep such things from happening, but it's too late now

or if the government learned to govern instead of squandering money away

I disagree with you on this.  See, I think the problem is that the market isn't free enough.  There should be no government-run mortgage companies.  The whole industry should be completely privatized and mostly self-regulated.

The problem isn't private control of the market -- the problem is bailouts.  Of course these companies are going to take massive risks if they have a good chance of the government bailing them out when they fuck up.

The way to solve this isn't more regulation, it's making sure we don't bailout anyone.  Don't bail out the companies, and don't bail out the families either.  I know that's harsh, but it's the only way you'll have a functioning market in the long run.  If people and companies truly feel the consequences of irresponsible choices, then they'll take less risks.  This will be a good thing, and it will result in a stable future.

It's already bad enough that the Fed Reserve bailed out Bear Stearns just so that J.P. Morgan could consume them.  We need to lessen the power of the Fed Reserve and free up the mortgage market more.

Yes, I know what you're hinting at.  Still, I would argue that a lot of the reason why Countrywide behaved as it did is because it figured it would probably get bailed out if it went under.

We need to set a business precedent in America that if you take massive risks and fail, you will suffer as a result of it.  It's not the nicest way of doing things, but you'll eventually see businesses and families behave differently in a more Darwinian market.  Getting burned a few times generally gets the message across.

Being cautious with investments should be heavily encouraged.  Eventually, we'll transform from being heavy borrowers into being heavy savers.

WTF are you doing wasting all your time typing on this forum when you could be out working a second job to pay for your stupid loan you couldn't afford?

Are you waiting for a government hand out or just lazy?
