Done it before, read up on it, I think I know how to do it. Now, I was just wondering, are there any disadvantages to doing it? Can I safely overclock my PC, I have a total of 5 fans running, 3 on case, on one CPU, and one on GPU. There are also 2 other vents. My case was supposed to have 4 fans though the one on the rear of the case was broken and I didnt care enough to send it back(should of, but didnt).

Now, I am virtually 100% sure my PC is running cool, though I do not know how to check this, I would like to check first. First, how would I go about checking this, and what would be a good operating temperature for my components. Also, how much should I overclock my GPU and CPU(and RAM?).

This is what is in my PC:
Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case
750W Power Supply
Q6600
2x2GB 240pin DDR2 SDRAM (PC2 6400)
160GB 7200RPM HD
8800GTS 512
Xfi Xtreme Gamer(this is currently disabled as I cant use a mic with it, need to return for a replacement sometime before January)
DVD Burner

Now, nothing so far is over clocked, everything is normal and working, just wondering what I should over clock and how much I should.

Speedfan and everest are good programs to use to check your temps.

Just remember to raise your FSB in small amounts, and then do some stress tests.

It's fairly straight forward for most people, but most people don't put thier thermal paste on the pins...

Look for a guide, I thought there was a good one that was made into a sticky but I can't find it.

Yeah I saw one bout the graphics cards. I did this with my last computer, I just went into BIOs and fucked around and kinda figured it out and got it working. I had just raised the clock speeds and shit.


Anyways, I just downloaded Speedfan. Im not entirely sure what it is telling me.

Temp1: 42C
Temp2:  19C
Temp 3: -2C
Temp: 0C
Core 0: 35C
Core 1: 36C
Core 2: 33C
Core 3: 36C

Those are temperatures, though I am not sure what they are for. Also, it says this:

Fan1: 1350RPM
Fan2: 0RPM
Fan3: 0RPM
Fan4: 0RPM


Now, I dont understand that as all my fans are running.


Also, how do I figure out the temperatures on other things such as my 8800 and RAM?

Humm, EVEREST tends to be not-so-accurate at times. I'd use RealTemp for CPU and SpeedFan for everything else. Then I'd get MemTest, wPrime, Prime95, and 3DMark06 for benchmark/stability test utilities.

What? I mean, I generally can figure these things out, and I dont usually fuck up(unless it is Thermal Paste), but what are those things? The descriptions often provided make absolutely no sense to me.

Speedfan can only measure fans that are plugged into your motherboard. As for checking your 8800 temp, get RivaTuner. RAM doesn't have a temp sensor.

MemTest, wPrime, Prime95, and 3DMark06 are all benchmarking/stability tests. Use these after you overclock to check your performance increase (or decrease if somethings wrong). If your pc locks up or crashes during theses test, lower your overclock a little and try again.

2 Questions, what do those results that I got from Speedfan mean, like the temperatures, like hows my CPU doing? Also, how the hell do you use this Riva Tuner? I finally found hidden .exe program, but now I cant figure out how to find the temperatures, and can I over clock using this program.

512-version (G92) is a good overclocker, on the stock cooler as well. In your speedfan results the Core0, 1, 2 and 3 are your CPU core temps. Temp1 is probably Motherboard chipset temp, and there doesn't seem to be any GPU temp at all

It is not 16C. It should be in the 35-55C range. And is usually marked as plain "Core". It can also be the Temp1, you can check it by running something graphics intensive and seeing if it starts rising significantly.

As for the clocks, it should hit 750-800 core just easily (Memory clock is not that important, and you can leave it at 1025 or the like.) Put it up in small steps and test stability with FurMark while keeping an eye on the temps. When it starts artifacting or the temps go over, say, 75C, put the core clock down a little and you are settled.

Im gonna go try out Crysis a little and see if the Temp1 rises, also, right now, these are my clock speeds:
Core-670
Shader-1674
Memory-972


Now I should be able to change them to this without the risk of any adverse side effects(within reason), correct?
Core-750
Shader-?
Memory-Turn up to 1025 or leave it?

Ok! Temp 1 went up to 51C after about 20 min of playing Crysis(the main reason for overclocking), though now it has a fire symbol next to the text.... Does that mean I shouldnt overclock?

No that means the temp is higher than what speedfan's default is. If you look here: http://processorfinder.intel.com/detail … Spec=SLACR Intel recommends your cpu up to 71°C (assuming you have the G0 version of the Q6600).

In speedfan, go to Configure > Temperatures > "Temp 1" > move the Warning temp up to 71°C. Then when you see the fire, it's trouble.

The fire is just the default warning level. Your card would be fine with 90+ temps. 75 is a good limit to keep a good level and be certain not to fry anything.

You should be able to put the clocks to 750/core, leave the shaders linked, and put 1025/memory. Then test a bit, and rise core by, say, 10-15MHz intervals, until you get problems. Then turn them down a few steps and you should be fine. Memory can stay at 1025. OC'ing it won't give you too much advantage, and causes artifacts easily.

Problems mean too high temps or artifacts. When you get artifacts, reboot the computer, and continue from where you left it.

First of all, never, ever use SpeedFan as a reliable temp reporting tool. It's not. It'll give you a grasp of what your temps are, and might be kinda good for day-to-day use, speed controlling and finding temps that no other app reports, but it's not reliable for finding exact temps when overclocking.

You should get RealTemp and CoreTemp. RealTemp will report temps 10C higher than CoreTemp, as they use different values for TJMax (95C for Real, 105C for Core), the thermal shutdown limit set by Intel, and the distance to which the temps are measured from. Intel won't release those numbers, but, honourable people, risking their new CPUs, have done some exact testing, and it's fairly certain that TJMax is 105C for 65nm and 95C for 45nm, so you could set RealTemp's TJMax to 105C, if you wish.

You should put your system under load, and fire up both of those apps, to see what your temps are. Idle temps are in most cases incorrect. You should make sure you're at least 30C from TJMax at all times.

As for the overclocking itself, we need to know your motherboard make and model. Different boards will clock differently, especially regarding power-hungry, high-VTT 65nm quads.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Ok my mobo is a Gigabyte P35 DS3R.


So right now, I should delete Speedfan and get RealTemp and CoreTemp?

Then set them both to 105C for the CPU?

Then what with the 8800?





Must excuse me, but Im getting confused between who is talking about the CPU and who is talking about the GPU.


EDIT: I downloaded RealTemp but I cant install it, says to run in Admin mode, which I am, and when I right click to manually do that, there isnt a "Run in Admin" thing to click..

Ahh forget RealTemp, I got CoreTemp and its working fine. My Tj. Max is set to 100C, right now, under pretty much no load, the cores are all around 32C except for Core 3 which is down to 26C. Now, should I put my CPU under pressure? If so, how? I dont know any program it struggles under.
