Old Biostar P4VMA-M was flaking out on my ATI card, so I got a new MB for my Bday, Asus P4S8X-MX-UAZY.

Biostar is on VIA Chipset, Asus is on SIS. Problem: How do I install the new board without having to reinstall windows or reformat alltogether? If its 100% not possible, would getting a new MB on a VIA chipset work? Had it work on intel boards in the past. Thanks everyone!

Why?

No really, WHY?

Look, just do the reinstall - it's by far the easiest way - yes, you _might_ with the right motherboard be able to get away without doing a reinstall, but really, a little bit of time and effort now will most probably save you endless headaches later. Also, doing a complete reinstall of windows every so often is A GOOD THING - it has a tendancy to clogged up with all sorts of crap - a reinstall clears that all out. Do it and you really won't regret it. Don't do it and there's a good chance you will.

i changed my mobo recently, and had this issue come up. the way to get around it is: put everything together, then boot from the windows install cd. pick the install option - not repair console. then, you get to choose repair install or clean install. pcik repair, and it will reintall the basics, and the correct drivers for the current system setup. then all you have to do is install drivers for new bits (i.e. mobo), and let windows update itself, and you're back on track with a new board, but all your files and settings are intact.

Just get an external drive and throw all your pron files and whatever else on it, and start fresh.  It's a good idea.  It's amazing how the junk builds up and slows your system down.   You can get an external case and a drive for under a hundred bucks on Newegg, slap it together, and now you have a way to backup your illegal mp3's and pron files, or . . .  cookie recipes, I don't know?

Well, replaced the board with an Asus. Video card is still the frakking problem. Which boggles me because it worked in someone else's computer which sent me to the motherboard. Frak me. AND it works fine for CS:S. Arg. Damn ATI 9800. Time for nVid. Its got a checkerboard over the ground. Shows white squares in night missions. Gorramit
