This might be a noob question, but will a PCI-E 2.0 card fit into a PCI-E x16 slot? Or will the card run at 2.0 bus speeds in the x16 slots? Im picking a new graphics card out, so last thing I need is to find out the card wont fit ...thanx

It'll fit, using PCI-E x16 rather than PCI-E 2.0 puts you at a slight disadvantage for a PCI-E 2.0 card but not by much. It'll be fine.

So with the 2.0 3870 series...the 2.0 bus speed wont make much of a performance difference in the long run if the Graphics Card is in the x16 slot?

Nah it only starts to make a difference with cards with huge bandwidth like 4870x2 for example.

Except that it will not. Not yet. PCI-E x16 can max anything out at the moment

There is a  <5fps difference with the higher end cards

PCI-E 2.0 and 1.1 are fully backwards compatible, both ways.

Agreed, it's been a long history in computing that the hardware interfaces far and beyond exceed the capabilities of the devices that use them. Happened with IDE, SATA, USB, so on and so forth until a while down the line. PCI-E is no exception.
