Is a quad core worth it or is an E8400 sufficient? Looking at the list of processors in the Super Pi thread, you can overclock that thing like nuts.

Would this motherboard work well with the E8400?

Gaming mostly. I do some video rendering in Sony Vegas (it was using 100% of the CPU I have now [dual core AMD 2.8GHz] the other day)

Unless you use a lot of multi threaded applications, (Mostly commercial) You wont see a lot of improvement. Games in the future will use more cores though. But, by then Nehalem will be readily available. (They will be quad too)

I currently have an E8400, no complaints here.

Edit: That motherboard supports 45nm procs.

Sony Vegas will use 100% of the CPU, no matter what CPU it is. If you're happy with your rendering speed and game FPS, there's no need to get a new one. If you're not, the E8400 is an excellent choice, or for the more budget minded, the E7200.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

i recommend a different CPU, the Q6600 Quad core 2.4 GHZ, its a similar price to the CPU you have suggested, it is easily overclocked to 3GHZ on stock cooling and can be overclocked to about 3.6-4GHZ

Q6600 at 3GHz on stock? That isn't gonna be long lived.

thats what i have read n the net and seen on the tube. But its a CPU that can be overclocked like mad

Most Q6600s right now tend to have problems even breaking 3.2... Pretty shitty batches.

serious???

even the go stepping???

i bought this CPU for my new build as my dad gave me £50, so it went towards this

can it be overclocked to 3GHZ at least?

So, the (dual/quad) processors do not split the work themselves, the programs/games have to tell them so?
Would that mean a speed loss in older games when switching from a 2,9GHz to a quad 2,4GHz?

It does that fairly easily (G0 ones anyway) hits about 65*c on the stock cooler as long as you have half decent case airflow to go with it.
