I have to catch the full show tomorrow, but here's the song;
Doctor Strangelove
Real Battlefield Veterinarian.

Are their songs really that long? While I don't believe that they played the same song through the commercial break and end credits, it seemed real long.

The studio crowd doesn't sit through commercials I don't think as there is usually a tape delay for editing and profanity.
Please, it appears to me that they did two takes.

lol check this out, I had to upload it in two parts;
a Rare live recording of Hemispheres.

Yeah, he's still just not my cup of tea.  I absolutely never said he can't sing, I just said I can't stand it.  I've always just felt like their chops and their writing comes from such a trained, well versed background.  Geddy's vocals are the only part of the band that don't seem godlike.

It just feels to me like their music is so good, it doesn't need vocals.  I've never turned on any Rush song for the vocals.  It's Peart, then Lifeson and Geddy's chemistry that gets me going.  Not to mention as I said, they might be the greatest trio ever...

They talk about that here.

Well he plays a Fender Jazz bass that's modded to his likings.  His fretwork and technique are flawless.  I've never really looked at Rush by looking at one person, as they are one of those bands, where it's what everyone is doing that makes it magical. Geddy is really fast though, he and Alex Lifeson go note for note on some fast ass runs.
He is good, there's no doubting that, but he's definitely not as fast as Billy Sheehan, Victor Wooten or Mark King and in terms of tight, note for note solo's with the guitarist I've seen John Myung and John Petrucci do stuff that is just as impressive. But it's like you say it's the overall package - Peart, Lifeson and Geddy are an awesome three peace and the influence they have had on subsequent great bands is undeniable.

I know there are bass players out there with comparable chops, but I would say nobody comes close to being as good as he while singing. In this video he is playing a fairly complicated part while singing, using pedals with his feet and triggering overdubs. Oh yeah, keyboards too. The bottom line is that when you are dealing with elite musicians it comes down to what you like better, as no bass player will ever mean as much to me personally as Geddy Lee.
Well I think Claypool leaves Geddy in his dust when it comes to singing while playing bass, I just cannot get my head around how Claypool can sing over basslines that are nearly impossible to play themselves. Check out this live clip of Primus (complete with a little tribute to Rush!) from a good few years back.

Don't get me wrong, Geddy is still a great bass player, better than 95% of the shitty bass players out there polluting the music industry but I just don't think he's anywhere near the top ten. He also paved the way for my favourite bass player Les Claypool and for that i am eternally grateful to him (Claypool even got his bass signed by Geddy when he was a young fanboy!).

Oh damn, you just uttered the name that ends all bass conversations, lol.  Well,  at least IMO you can't really put Victor Wooten on the same level as anyone.

On topic, I thought the way Colbert was talking over them kinda sucked, they were throwing down.  Man Lifeson is so sick.

I fucking missed Wooten playing round the corner from my house about a year back...there was a lot of banging my head of the wall after that realisation! I've seen Mark King, Stanley Clarke, Tony Levin, Baghiti Khumalo, Bootsy Collins and Stu Hamm and besides Larry Graham and probably Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten is the only bass legend left for me to check out.

One day I'll catch him...one day!

Yeah for sure....

I've seen him three times, once alone, once with Bela Fleck, and once with his brothers.  I played a gig in St Louis, a venue called Mississippi Nights (RIP), and he was playing the next night.  He showed up the night before his gig, so we got to hang out, shoot the shit, etc.  He's a really cool guy, and his hands are tiny, haha.

You should definitely check out Oteil Burbidge.  He's sick.

I'd have to say, Victor Wooten, Charles Mingus, and Jaco round out my list of favorites though...
