I rarely post any news, no, make that never. But this one caught my eye, mainly because this, in all its absurdity, is where urban legends are made from.

Tom Talks, 80, fractured his ankle while walking his dog and was taken to hospital where he was fitted with the cast. But his leg swelled up and he was left in agonising pain which forced to return several times to ask doctors to loosen the cast to relieve the pressure. They refused and Mr Talks eventually collapsed and was rushed to hospital by ambulance where surgeons told him he was lucky to be alive.

Tom Talks, 80, recovers in hospital today after having his leg amputated. Mr Talks broke his ankle and his leg became swollen after his cast became too tight. They found an infection so severe Mr Talks, a retired engineer, had to undergo surgery to amputate his right leg above the knee.

He suffered a heart attack and severe kidney problems after surgery and is still recuperating in hospital.

A spokesman for Pennine Acute Trust said: 'We can confirm that a complaint has been received from the family.'

Thats fucking awful they do make some stupid mistakes in health care. I will however be forever grateful for what they have done for me in the past. Poor bastard having to loose his leg through no fault of his own.

Very rarely do I actually laugh sat at my desk but I did on this occasion, a classic programme and a funny clip. How did you come across it? (must be a fan of The Fast Show).

On to a serious note: A lot of people over here have died in hospitals from superbugs, they have gone in for the slightest thing and haven't come back out. I lost my Mum due to her bursting her bowel with a peanut, she had been having chemo for 4 months as she fought cancer and had just about won the fight, she went on a cruise to celebrate and all this happened in Germany. My Sister got diagnosed with breast cancer about 6 weeks ago by accident while in hospital so luck comes and goes. Shes had the op and its a complete success, she very lucky how they found out. I used all my luck up 7 years ago when our lil one came along.

I have heard stories of people in hospital with an infected limb needing an amputaion only to wake up and realise they still have their leg, only to see how the wrong one had been removed.

Shocking how mistakes like that can be made but what more can you do other than put your trust in these highly trained personnel? Im not a surgeon myself so have to let them take over. Ive seen both ends of the scale when it comes to medical professionals and geniusu's/idiots. Myself, well I would be towards the idiot end of the scale and am grateful for what I have so dont criticise them much, but will if it effected me like it did that mans family in the story.

I'm not a surgeon but have done stuff to myself instead of going to the hospital and getting 6 weeks off work, daft I know but I have lived to tell the tale, its usually an operation carried out under general anesthtic, I did it myself using half a bottle of jacks and a bag of weed (sorry, I dont say this as its a good thing, drugs are bad) but that was my pain relief.

Not surprising, doctors often ignore the complaints of kids and old people. When I was about 12 years old I broke my wrist - or so I had thought. Eventually after many complaints about the pain not dying down after the cast went on (which usually tends to happen) they decided to take it off and have a look and discovered my entire forearm up to the elbow was black and blue. I had ruptured a blood vessel and the solid cast was only making it worse.

I was also pretty much told I was faking when I went into hospital about my appendix. When I got it taken out the doctor apologised for not believing me and said I actually had grumbling appendicitis and that it had been almost ready to burst.

When i fell over in Italy on a slope the doctors there put a cast on my wrist/forearm and it was that tight when I returned home they said it'd made it worse .. great.

Yeah i had a bout of appendicitis again after they had taken it out the said it was quite inflammed and lucky they got to it to it before it burst.

Also another jewel that happened to my partners grandfather,the doctors mis-diagnosed him with IBS for a year,then the doctor changed at the pratice to which he sent him to the hospital straight away.Turns out he has bowel cancer and could of caught it alot earlier if he wasn't mis-diagnosed....

One of my grandads died (8-10 years ago) from bowel cancer. They thought they got it all, but somewhere along the line the doctors fucked up and it came back. I think they actually missed parts of it cause they fucked up looking for it in the first place, but I'm not too sure ~ i was only like 8-10 at the time. Can't really remember...

Generally, the extreme geriatric is in extraordinary danger when the topic of surgery comes up. Most times he would not even be touched if it were not necessary to the continuation of his life. The risk of infection is quite high and the healing time + med costs are also considerable. I find it quite funny that people here burst into outrage over something that is pretty darn normal. Feel bad for the man to lose his leg, but don't forget that living to eighty years old is no small feat in it's own right.
