Police-recorded crime in England and Wales fell 9% in the 12 months to March, latest figures suggest. The annual crime report for 2007-2008 reveals the longest recorded period of falling crime - down 48% from 1995.

Police officers in UK aren't equipped with firearms, although they are issued with other lethal and non lethal equipment, depending on each county. So, they don't carry firearms, yet they managed to get crime rates down.

The only reason Police-Recorded crime is falling. Is because nobody bothers calling the Police anymore, as it's not like they're going to do anything about the chavs now are they? You have to deal with it yourself or let it be. Calling the police would do fuck all. Kind of like a Latin American country, there really is no point in having a police force.

Don't let the right-wing Americans hear you saying that, their solution was for everyone to get a samurai sword so as there would be a 'level playing field'.

It's funny how the same people don't agree with Iran making the nuclear playing field level.

PS: I think knife related homicide has been going steadily up actually, I may be wrong though...I've been watching a lot of Sky News lately.

Its a complicated situation in the UK, not least how crime is recorded. A larger part of the 'drop' is Police officers often refuse to record a crime until they are confident it can be cleared up.

Police officers aren't 'generally' equipped with firearms, however if there is a report of even a suspicion of a gun then a bunch of blokes with MP5s and Glocks will be on your doorstep very promptly.
Police often patrol with firearms in certain areas, flying squads have always been armed and there are usually armed response vehicles cruising around.

The average plod on the beat - who pretty much doesn't exist any more - won't generally have a gun though, but a good collection is available in every medium sized police station.

I can't speak for other countries, but here in Argentina we have two kinds of police forces. One is the Federal Police with jurisdiction in the whole country, but they are settled in Buenos Aires, and they are the official police force of Buenos Aires too. The others are the police of each province. I trust the Federal Police, but I don't trust the police from provinces since they are pricks.

There's more community officers who have zero powers than anything else, and they're usually about 5ft tall so they're not exactly intimidating.

That would likely be the case over here, most gangs here don't really care about the police coming down on them. Ever pass the courthouses and they're alwasy outside, boasting about what they were convicted of. The Police just don't give out the impression they used to, and that's all down to too much PC bs, which also leads to how so many officers are incapable of taking on threats these days because they're afraid of the backlash.
