A woman is suing the Green Iguana Bar & Grill after, she says, the bar served her a "flaming shot" of Bacardi 151 proof rum while she was underage one evening four years ago -- and she then burned herself from her chest to the top of her head.
Shannon Hyman, now 24, filed suit on July 10 against the corporation that operates the Green Iguana's various restaurants. She is seeking more than $15,000 in damages, according to a copy of the lawsuit.
On July 16, 2004, Hyman, then 20, was at the Green Iguana at 8790 Bay Pines Blvd., but neither she nor her friends were asked to produce identification, the lawsuit says. The drinking age in Florida is 21.
A bartender [pi]encouraged her to drink a "flaming shot" of Bacardi 151 proof rum, the suit says.[/i]"I got scared of the flames and spit it," Hyman said in a telephone conversation today. "It just went everywhere." Typically, the shot is lit right before the patron swallows it, and there is no resulting fire."They said Bacardi 151 because it is so rich in alcohol, and easy to light," Hyman said.Hyman suffered third-degree burns and was rushed to a hospital by one of her friends, she said.
"I'm suing because I should not have been let in," Shannon said today. "If I weren't let in, none of the events would have happened."
