- Iraq: We could take over security by year’s end

I know where I live in North Central Texas, I saw thousands American Flags stuck to cars, with in days. That lasted for over a year. Didn't you all notice it? I will never forget how shocked and hurt our country was after we were hit. America was behind this war from the beginning. It will take generations to absorb and dissect exactly what was right and what went wrong. Lets just all hope history doesn't repeat itself, like Afghanistan circa 1980.

Wow, I'm glad I found that myself. That's about exactly as I see this topic, too.
Ill also never forget the thousands of Iraqs have died for their country too.

ASAP seems to be the least desired action.

I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something. - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

Iraq for the Iraqis. The invasion was called Operation Iraqi Freedom, after all. Good work, boys.
Well, I stand corrected about the popularity of the Iraq War.
I suppose I now have to support GS's notion. I'll even take it a step further -- we DESERVE the debts we've incurred for being stupid enough to want to invade.

I'm gonna give Iraq another year or so until you can say it's over. 29 U.S soldiers alone died in June, I wouldn't call it over just yet
If the Iraqi goverment says they have it, let them have it. I would support a phased withdrawl of troops, starting in less active areas, then pulling out support as practical to give the Iraqi goverment and its security forces the best chance of success.
I would also support a temporary military base out in the middle of BFE for training and to have troops on hand if something goes wrong and the Iraqis need fast support, but having no day-to-day securtiy duties other than base security. Nothing happens over time, even that base goes away, to become property of the Iraqi Army as a training post.

The minute we leave the country will fall apart. The problem that we were running into their is that the people want to follow their clan and their tribes before they go along with the central government.
Is that a bad thing? I mean, central government can be a great thing, but if "the people" don't want it, what is the point in forcing it upon them?SgtHeihn wrote:

Granted. And I have never been the one yelling "Get the troops out now!" Believe me, I have been fighting this battle since I got back from Iraq. However, if the Iraqi government is to have any legitimacy on its own, and not simply regarded as a puppet of the US, then we have to treat it seriously. We have been training their security forces for quite a while; they have to step up to the big leagues eventually.SgtHeihn wrote:

I am more worried because the way their culture is, and the way their government was priviously run, that it will soon once again resemble a government as would be run by a mafia boss. Family means everything to them, just like in latin america, even above the law. If that starts to take hold again, then it will be right down the toilet. Maybe they need a couple hundred years of isolationalism to get them feeling like a single nation and not a collection of tribes. Or to break apart back into those tribes.
Either way, if the government says they can handle it, we MUST start letting them, or just tell the world they are as much of a joke as they have been saying and suspecting from the start.

Yes actually it is, the only reason that most of the tribes are following the line is because we are paying them. We leave and the country is going to fall into civil war, one side is going to backed by Iran. Iran doesn't want a strong Iraq.KEN-JENNINGS wrote:
