Ok, a little background.

I now work 6 days a week, 9 hour shifts each day + an hour each side of that because of transporting to and from work
I have very little time to play on my PC or really to do anything apart from the odd time going out and getting drunk

Well I was thinking it would be nice to have something I could carry with me and have a little game during any free time I manage to get (like during my work break and while I'm sitting on public transport)

My worries are:

1) Is a DS Lite worth £100ish
2) Whether or not there is enough good/great games to play

So can you guys and gals(if any) out there who have a DS Lite, or in fact the old DS, would you consider it worth it, taking into consideration quality of the games and the console itself.

(I would also like a list of the games that are considered "great" or "worth every penny")

1) NO, for £30 more you can have a PSP, which means you can also watch dvds and upload all your music onto it and listen to them also, and there are some bril games out for it.
2) DS games comprise mostly of pet loving games, mario saturated storylines, lame simuators like doctor thing, cooking mama and other bullshit like that, with the PSP you get proper games like GTA Liberty/Vice city, Medal of Honor Heroes 1 and 2, Call of Duty, Pro evo 6 and 8 , Fifa 06/07/08, Final Fantasy, Need for speed Underground/Most Wanted/Carbon/Pro Street and many more to which your tastes suit.

Yeah, I was gonna question whether or not the DS has anything to offer other than typical Nintendo crap and a touchscreen but the first guy really summed it up.

PSP really is better overall.  I should ask for one for Christmas.

Not a fair opinion, at all.  PSP faboy anyone?

I have a DS, ad although I dont oen a PSP, I have played one quite a bit.

I bought my orginal DS several years back for $130 USD and Im still in love with it.  Games wise, it really shines one the RPG/Strategy side, with games such as Advance Wars, the FF  remakes as well as a few orginal FF titles, and a whole slew of third party RPGs/strategy games.  It does have a few simulators, which are fun, although most arent really worth their hefty tag for such a short game.  There is a massaive collection of Ds games out, spanning every genre, still the best value I've gotten in a handheld.

On the PSP side, if your not investing in hacking the PSP to get homebrew stuff on it, dont waste your time and money to be honest.  While it does have some great games, it doesnt have a whole lot of great games.  Movie side, unless your ripping your own, expect a small variety in the UMDs, and pay more then what a DVD would cost(at least last time I saw them in shops they were).  If you plan on doing the homebrew aspect, well worth investing it, can become quite the great multimedia handheld.

The sole factor pushing the DS better then the PSP for me is the battery life.  PSPs is realtivly short, whereas I've gotten 18 hours+ out of my DS depending on what your using.

The last posts seem to fall in line with th last generation ahtred ont he gamecube, because apparently if you dont have graphic violence in all your games, your system is terrible.  God forbid you enjoy a platfomer, or puzzle game without blood all over   Lets all hate on Nintendo, they were only the ones that revived the dying gaming market back in the 80s.

DS > PSP (for lack of better phrasing). Smaller, lighter, better battery life and it can play all GBA games. Also, if you get an R4 (or equivalent) you can play your music too.

2) DS games comprise mostly of pet loving games, mario saturated storylines, lame simuators like doctor thing, cooking mama and other bullshit like that
You say that like its a bad thing.

It is

But by all means, get a DS if you think you would like one, but you'll get bored quickly of the games avaiable for the platform.

Yes.

Get a DS, but never buy any games, instead get this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/M3-DS-1Gb-Micro … B000SI69X6

Maybe a couple of those mini-SD cards, too.

With one of them, you can acquire any game you want and play it. The DS has some great games to pass time on, such as the Final Fantasy remakes, Advance Wars, Pokemon (Only for the cool people), Bomberman, Mario games etc.

With the M3 card, you can also put films on and watch them. I'm so glad I got my DS, although I got mine early on, so I have one of the old ones, and the screen is so dull compared to the Lite's, but I fully recommend a DS with an M3 card.

You can play all your music, all your videos, all old PS games, GBA games, SNES games, Neo Geo games, Megadrive games etc. on PSP. All you need to do so is a copy of GTA-Liberty City Stories (can vary depending on firmware version) and a memory stick and it's easy.

On top of that the PSP games are great. God of War, FF Crisis Core, GTA, PES, Patapon etc. It's a great handheld, way better than the DS, though there are some great little games on the DS as well. The only thing the DS beats the PSP on is battery life - in every other respect the PSP is much better.

Fanboi, anyone?

1) You can have customized content on the DS. There's a few threads in Other Titles about the R4 and such. Don't forget that the PSP requires separate memory to be bought for savegames, as its games run on CD.
2) While DS games have 'saturated' titles like Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Castlevania, it also has Final Fantasy, Advance Wars, an upcoming Metal Slug and is backward compatibile with all Gameboy Advance titles. Look on Nintendo's site for lists of games that go beyond the PSP fanboy stereotype of the DS.
3) The PSP has some great titles going for it. Honestly, if I want blow-your-socks-off movies and 3d gaming, I'd just go for a laptop.

Compared to the PSP, the DS has brighter screens, better sound, better ergonomics and has been more of a joy to play than the PSP. There's a good reason it sells better than the PSP, and I'm coming from the angle of someone who has both systems and has enjoyed both reasonably well.

Only half-true. I don't need to shroud the DS Lite when I'm playing it on the road due to interfering sunlight.

There is indeed. It is more accessible for more casual gamers, especially young kids and girls. This is a huge market segment that Microsoft are now trying to edge into, so far unsuccessfully. With a much bigger target market, it is quite normal that the DS should sell better than the PSP (which to be honest is not that great unless the firmware is cracked, when it becomes superb).

I currently have a couple of films, God of War, GTA Liberty City, Patapon, FFVII Crisis Core, Burnout, Metal Slug Collection, Pirates, Breath of Fire 3, Doom, a SNES emulator with about 50 games, a CPS2 emulator with about 20 games and loads of music all installed on my PSP. I can take it anywhere and not have to worry about carrying games around or anything like that. That is what a great handheld is all about, having a great and diverse range of entertainment that you can access on the move. The only letdown is the comparatively limited battery life.

Yea, but all you do is buy 2 or 3 extra batteries, charge them all up when the PSP is not in use and then your good to go.

(haven't read all of what people have said, sorry if i repeat some stuff, anyway)

DS is very good handheld system, but only if you can handle grapicts around that of the N64 (at best). Their are a lot of good games out their, The lastist advanced wars is sweet (turn based strategy), the remake of super Mario 64 (i cant remember the name) (its kinda like an adventure game and its based off one of the best games ever put on a Nintendo system) is good if you haven't played super Mario 64. For the most part, any game made by Nintendo is a good game if your into that type of game.

(Side note: I'm extremely bisast towards Nintendo, having played on Nintendo consoles sense idk when).

Get a DS if you like Pokemon or Mario because that's some of the best stuff you can find. If you cant stand that stuff then I don't think the ds is for you.

There's that word again. It crops up often where the PSP is concerned.

I have a DS and a PSP, and if i were to choose, i would get the DS. More games and all you need to do is get an R4 to get free games and shit.

Whoa dude tell me more, where can I get one of these m3 micro cards. Do you just download roms off the internet for free and store them on that then you are able to play the game? And if you do that can you play on wifi?

Despite what some say, the games available for the DS are all similar in their target audience and general feel.  If you like those types of games, the DS is great.  Personally, the PSP has a much larger selection of games that appeal to me.  I can't stand the style of games available on the DS... I like realistic graphics, not japanese anime graphics.

So it really depends on what types of games you prefer.  If you want to play as  a bloodthristy warrior who rips heads off and graphically maims his enemies, get the PSP.  If you want to play as Sonic with a bunch of bright happy colors and a fast pace, get the DS.  To each his own.
