Good evening Guru's
I have a quick challenge. I'm going over to my Dad's tomorrow and he's after a new Laptop to replace his old crappy one. I said "hmm, not sure but i know of whom to ask"
This is obviously the point where i ask the all-knowing Brotherhood of bf2s.com, Tech section to suggest me said item to recommend.
Being in his 70's and my Mum in her 60's gaming is not an issue. They simply need it to email/browse/skype/store photos etc and a webcam would be good as i have a sister living in the good old U.S of A.
So fairly basic then and i would be very grateful for your help with karma forthcoming.

  Kind Regards, Horse

My experience with dell:

-buy a computer 1000 bucks cheaper than anything with identical specs.
-spend 1500 making it as usable as said identical computer.

Laptops are a different issue. DELL laptops are pretty decent, in price too. I'd recommend HP / DELL, and that Inspiron isn't too bad.

I have an HP laptop. It sucks. It was reformatted a month or two ago and it still randomly shuts down on me. The trackpad mouse died about 2 months after I bought it.

Don't go with HP.

You've been in bad luck, my friend. I've had five HPs, and all of them are still working. The one I'm typing on right now, is from 2004, and has been dropped down some stairs, and gone to daily business meetings for three of those years. The only real problem with it, is the power switch, which takes 2-3 presses to work.

I recommend HP. They also have those wonderful buttons to turn off the trackpad whiles typing, and a scroll area on it, too. I could never live without either, ever again.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
