As compared with when President Bush assumed office in 2001, federal spending consumes three more days of your life, while federal regulations (which had remained stable for the previous four years) take another full day. State and local spending consume another six days just since 2003.

Here's the kicker. The economy has grown by $2.9 trillion since 2003, and tax revenues have increased by $785 billion. But spending has grown much more sharply. "Had the federal government limited federal spending to grow only as rapidly as the economy since 2000, Mr. Norquist writes, "the budget would have been balanced by 2006 and in surplus today."

Can government that takes more than half the national income produced by productive and hard-working people be sustained much longer?
Spending and regulation together, then, consume 53.9 percent of national income.
gg everyone.

I hear that 3 months out of the year, your paycheck goes to government.

At least we can justify it by looking at the incredible programs we get for it.... medicare, social security, wars

Oh wait..

Large, bureaucratic, war-prone government ftl.. we need to consolidate everything and rethink it's spending powers.  I do realize that much of what we pay for goes to infrastructure maintenance and the like but it'd be nice to see a plan to provide some subsidization for basic needs like health care and better support for higher education

It's actually more than six. And since most are taxed around the 28% range federally...guess who gets the rest? State and local.

And euros think we aren't taxed enough in the US...

Tbh I think the USA's problems with taxes is the (from what I hear) insane bureaucracy surrounding said taxes.

That is more along the lines with what I was thinking.

i don't remember the exact numbers, but generally around 40% of the government's annual income is wasted in some form or another...
Either 15 or 20% just disappears and is unaccounted for, and another 20% is just squandered away

no source though, someone else will have to find one if it is wanted

94% of federal spending is in the form of social welfare and military, with the vast majority of that being social welfare.

That would be just the fed.. include state/county sales tax , income tax (if applicable), and all other governmental "fees" (like doc stamps on the deed for your house) and you work much more than half your life for the government. There is a word for that..
