I am going on vacation in a week and I'm going to need to be able to connect to my desktop (at home) from my laptop (with me, on vacation). All I need to do is start a program on my desktop and that's it. More specifically, run a PC game and log on to it. Will the regular Window remote PC program work for this? If not, what program should I use?
Real VNC
Download the free version. You connect via IP address.

If using the Normal Remote Desktop Windows Thing....
I believe that XP Home does not include the remote desktop facility (you can connect to the computer, but cant connect from it)
You will need to allow remote connections to the remote computer in Control Panel -> System.
If using any remote desktop application....
If the computer is behind a router, you will need to forward the remote desktop port (3389 for Windows One, 5900 for UltraVNC) on your router to the local computer (and this will need to be assigned a static IP)
Your global IP of the PC you are trying to connect to, will no doubt change whilst you are on holiday, unless you know you have a static IP (this static IP is different from the local static IP you will need to setup for port forwarding in above step!). The best way around this that I know is to use a Dynamic DNS service (I use http://dyndns.org)

Yeah, I was gonna elaborate as you did, but lazued out last minute, I planned on adding all that when he replied
I do have dynamic IP address, but it changes only about once a month, if that often. Both computers will be running XP Pro. Is there anything special I need to know other then what I will find out in the multiple Remote Desktop Tutorials I will read?Titch2349 wrote:

In the Op you mentioned something about running a game over a remote desktop, could you elaborate?
If you're just managing a server with an app, then you'll be OK, but if you plan on running an actual game and playing it, look somewhere else, it
s highly unlikely you'll get something playable(unless MAYBE, you're running T1 on both computers, even then, you'll get like 5FPS)

Not sure- I haven't read any Remote Desktop Tutorials, but make sure you forward the port on your router, and that computer will need a static IP.ceslayer23 wrote:

That could be a problem. If it's a 3D game, expect it not to work. Sending that many graphics over internet will not really work.ceslayer23 wrote:

Try "log me in" its easy enough.
Just to clarify, the game I will be logging into is Eve-online, but I will not actually be playing it, I just need to log in. Once I have done that I can close the connection to my desktop.
Why would you want to just plain login
Regardless, it'll be a complete bitch to to, and it'll take forever, but if you're not going past the main menu, it's doable.

I take it you're talking about skill swaping?ceslayer23 wrote:

https://secure.logmein.com/home.asp?lang=uk
This should suitble to you're needs however it will be a slow as it cannot load up frams fast enough for gaming.
Would recommend LogMeIn
