There's been plenty of name your top films threads, but I'm after some great non-English titles if you know any.
I'll list 3 of my favourite, and would like to hear yours:
7 Samurai
The highest rated non-English movie on imdb, and for a reason. Easily one of my favorite movies, and it's still got such a great story and plot. Great director, actors, battle scene's, the hero's it's all excellent. Even though this movie is in black and white you couldn't top it.
Ran
This movie has the same director as 7 Samurai - Akira Kurosawa, and after watching all the other great Japanese epics of his, this would have to be my 2nd fav.
It retells Shakespeare's King Lear but is set in feudal Japan. Great acting, battle scenes it's brilliant from start to finish. The Great Lord's fall into madness while his three sons pick apart the former faction and divide the provinces and then turn on each other is just epic.
Letters From Iwo Jima
Letters if you haven't seen by now you should. I can't understand how this was so good compared to Flags of Our Fathers, but maybe Flags was more moving for US audiences. You connected with the Japanese Generals and the soldiers from of both sides. I think knowing that the island would ultimately fall before first watching it I think you felt sorry for the characters immediately.
The losses the US suffered could have been dealt with better though, to emphasise and lead to the decision to drop the two nuclear weapons, but that would be my only complaint.
So what makes your top list of non-English titles?
