Okay, so I've got this thing I want to hang on my wall. I need to secure it with screws.

Now, in tech class we often screw together pieces of wood to build sets for shows. This involves using a pre-drill (or a drill, whatever you want to call it, to make the hole first). Now, with random pieces of 2x4 this is fine.

But my wall isn't a random piece of 2x4... it's, well, a wall. And since I don't live in the Dark Ages, there are water pipes in these walls and electrical wiring.

My question is, how do I go about making these 3 holes without electrocuting myself? I don't have x-ray vision so I can't see whether I'm drilling into wires.

A good stud finder will find studs, metal, and electrical equipment behind the sheet rock.

Wow, it's my 1000th day here!

If you want, take a finishing nail and poke it through the wall, it wont puncture anything, but then you wont really puncture the pipe or fuck up the wiring unless your pressing really hard. Its only drywall, so yeah, just start drilling, but you might wanna find a stud or your pictures gonna fall. If you hit something, its probably a stud, they are every 16 inches in a normal house.

You usually don't have to worry about putting crap in your walls (think nails for a picture frame). It should just be insulation, if anything. However, if you are worried about being electrocuted (rather foolish, as you would literally have to pierce the wiring right on with a nail or screw) you can always use your fusebox to shut off power for so long as you are working.

The wires and everything are back further, you won't come near them. Just use a 1'' screw if it's going into the dry wall, or a 1 1/4 screw if its going into the beam. Make sure you use those plastic anchors to hold the screw, or it will just rip right out of the wall.

How heavy is the thing you want to secure?

If its not to heavy, then you don't need to drill into a stud.

Just drill a hole threw the drywall.. just go deep enough so you go through only the drywall if there is something behind it.. chances are there aren't.. and even if there is you won't hit it unless you go really deep..

Put a drywall anchor into the drywall.. then screw in whatever you want..

If Its something not to heavy.. like a picture or a shelf with a few things on it.. then it should be fine.. If you going to hang something heavy.. Get the stud finder and just drill right into the stud.

Nail plates cover the studs where the wires are. Won't be able to drill through it once you find it. Most wiring is only 12 inches up the wall besides light switches. And if you hit a wire, you won't die.

In my old house to drill shit into the wall you needed a masonry drill. Concrete walls are the lulz.

Actually masonry drills are the lulz too. Always a blast.

or you can just knock on the walls to find a stud.

and youll be fine if u touch an electrical wire, its very unlikely and theyre all shielded anyway

and if u hit a water pipe. you will KNOW about it
