Kay, so I haz an old electric keyboard(Musical) with a headphone Audio out but no midi,

I've once heard of some app that can measure the frequencies from an Audio in and convert them to Midi, so I can use said keyboard with Reason

Any googling has only led me to .midi to .mp3 converters.

Audio in means the keyboard's hooked up to your computer somehow. If it doesn't have a jack to connect a wire from the keyboard to your PC, you might be up a creek.

The only way I can think of is to record what you play with a good mic and convert the wav to MIDI.

I forget (because I've never used Reason), but can't it just record regular (microphone) audio?

Norr, I wanna plug the headphone out into the audio in on my soundcard.

Uhh... I don't know what I am talking about here...and they can do some shit with computers now adays...

But I don't think its gonna happen? MIDI isn't really a sound thing, its just a sequence of even triggers... the program would literally have be able to decode a recording and break it down to every individual note played, identify the note and trigger an event....

I guess that would be possible, but it seems like chords and stuff simultaneous stuff would be hard to pick up?

Yeah, I'll give you the Chords thing, but other than that, should be doable, just have it map Frequencies to different notes.

But yeah, once you get into chords it gets complicated.

I'm guessing your keyboard doesn't have ports for this...

As previously mentioned and as of yet not responded to, why can't you just take the audio output and go to the line in on your soundcard? Just run a cable from the headphone out (if it's that old and headphones are still actually headphones you may need a quarter inch/3.5mm adapter) to your system's line-in.

Because he wants to use it as a controller for his software that he runs.  AFAIK, I don't think you'll be able to do it.  I know there are ways around it when you have a midi out, but if it's just a headphone out, I think you might be screwed.

Just pick up a $100 controller online or at a store.  I'm sure it would have a nicer feel than an old low end kb.

Trew Trew,

But my budget barely extends to the length of buying a $2 3.5mm audio able, I'll see if there are any Midi keyboards on Craiglist

If your keyboard is not MIDI compatible, this will never work. Even if you found some app that could translate audio to MIDI (which I don't believe exists), it still wouldn't be able to map to the different MIDI channels. Nevermind the fact that you wouldn't be able to send your MIDI data to the keyboard for playback, which is really the entire point of using MIDI. It also would be expensive. If a $2 cable is really out of your budget, don't even think about this.

Your choices are:
1. get a MIDI keyboard
2. get a different hobby

Sorry.
