Kay, so I basically spend 6+ hours a day computing, and most of the time it's pointless crap(Reader, gmail, Stumbleing)

I've always been interested in setting stuff up and all that but I don't like actually doing stuff there, so I run a blog that's modified to a milimeter of where I want it, it(used to) runs on my home server which sits in my closet, I have full email, MySQL, PHP and anything else I'd want

I set up a forum for a friend, spent 3 hours dealing with how shitty the platform he picked is, then he upgraded and I had to do it all over again. Now I'm waiting for him to get a host :@

It may sound like I'm bitching, but I had fun while I was doing that, and I wanna do it again.

Then I watched

Apparently it's called "Network Admin" and ima be one when I grow up,

Being 14 it's not exactly easy to get a top-level sys-admin right-off the bat, ALTHOUGH,

My dad runs a "business" he bought a bunch of $6000 coffee vending machines that do EVERYTHING, and he's working on getting them out to businesses(They get the machine for free, he stocks it and all, and they pay him ~$1/cup)

At one point he needed more clients, so he signed up for the local Chamber of Commerce trade show,

I was bored and decided to come over, Between the free pizza, buffalo wings and telling people about the machines(My English was is better than his, and everyone was swarming towards the smell of Coffee)

I decided to check out the Telus/Cisco booth, they were advertising IPV4 telephones for corporate offices, and I started to talk to the guy that ran the booth.

In "short" 30 mins later the guy comes over to our booth(he had someone else take over) and basically tells my dad that I'm pretty much HIRED, other than the fact that I'm 14Yo.(While I was at their booth, he basically quizzed me on the basics of IPV4(DNS, IP ranges, Subnets, hostnames, etc)

So now I wanna Admin someones network, gimme gimme.

Gimme a network to admin

I did, and I ran my blog off of it(and I still would've, but in my temporary living condition, the ISP is gay and blocks Port 80)

And it's no fun managing an exchange server with only 1 account, and Remote desktoping into my own computer loses its charm pretty quick.

Good luck finding the job in that video. I can tell you that it's not 1% as cool as they make it seem. It's about as close to real life as Hogwarts is to your school.

My point was that being quizzed on the basics of IPV4 will not land you a job at anywhere important. No less by someone operating a booth at a trade show. You know the fools in the thewebsiteisdown video? The marketing folks? Yeah, those people run the booths to sell the product. The engineers have better things to do and the hiring managers are probably busy doing interview and shuffling the flood of resumes that a a company like that brings it.

But you know, whatever. I wasn't there, I don't know what the actual conversation was, but "basically hired" is sketchy as hell and you've got 8 years to go through college and a handful more for experience.

I'm glad you like the networking angle though, it's where I'm trying to head myself.

Well I guess my writing fails tonight, cuz I'm not really hoping for a top-level position, but "basically hired" is a start, better than the rest of the 9th graders that can't tell an internal ip from an external.

Totally, as a commenter on the blog puts it,

Sure. OK. Just let me know when you want to start, and I'll send you the root access usernames and passwords to all my organization's servers, routers, client PCs, web sites and databases. We have absolutely no problem with an unknown person having access to all of our sensitive equipment and data.

Seriously, that video is satire and doesn't reflect the real world ... the job typically is unappreciated when things are going well, and high stress when things are going sour. But, if you like working with systems then look around for a company that hires interns or a small business that doesn't know what it is doing and is willing to risk ... ask around. Also, a lot of non-profit organizations do not have technically savvy people in them, and they are always looking for technical help (though it will probably be volunteer work).

Make sure that you present yourself as clean and mature since these roles are more and more "trusted" and businesses must ensure that the employees with access to their sensitive data are going to be ethical.
