For those considering going solar for their homes, check out the following article which goes over one guy in CA's (not me) experience in selecting a contractor, deciding on style/location/manufacturer of panels, price, etc.  Includes detailed installation pictures from his house.

Here is a followup article after one month of use:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2 … 042,00.asp

summary:  not cheap by any means - still >30k for installation AFTER rebate.  reduced electric bill by 90% though which is good.  will require maintenance like cleaning panels due to tree debris and ash from CA fires, etc.

of course we anticipate that solar panel efficiency should improve over time.  Further, with more and more installations occuring, the price should also come down.  but...for those first adopters...ouch!

Anyone out there have any experience doing this?

That's a great find.  I've been researching this with my house.  My house is basically a tent with screen door windows right now.
