I knew about the story, but did not know the details really.  I love the movie.  I mean, it is my #1 movie right now.

Anyone else find this story truly amazing for a whole bunch of reasons?

Also....if he had not done anything to repel the russians, what do you think the world would be like now?  especially the ME?

Yeah, great movie, I really enjoyed it. The idea of a badass coke snorting, Russian repelling, whore sexing senator appeals to me.

Pretty good movie.
Bit hollywood-ized, and I don't like Julia Roberts, but Hofman as Gust made up for any other faults...

I highly recommend the book

oh god no. there is no way i would have gone to all that trouble...from the beginning it was just something that i wanted to do for myself. i have a friend in DC that has quite a few contacts, and was able to talk to some really informed people.
it was quite an experience, thats for sure.

Great movie. Too bad our political leaders on both sides of the aisle won't take the lesson that it teaches.

We should've left Afghanistan alone back in the day, because the rise of the fanatics against the Russians led to the formation of the Taliban.  The Soviets were a much more managable enemy than Islamists.

For this reason, I can't say that I liked Charlie too much.

do you honestly think the "islamists" pose a greater threat to the American quality of life than the soviets?

That depends...  The Soviets were more powerful, but they had more to lose and could be reasoned with.  Jihadists/Islamists are generally not the most rational people you'll meet.  They have a lot less to lose, and while they aren't nearly as powerful as the Soviets were, they can continuously create chaos.

you know people blame the US for the taliban, but I find that beyond retarded.  We helped them expel the russians.  yes we left a power vacuum there, but why is that our fault?  why didnt their fellow arabs help them?  no admonishment towards them, just the US, and that is BS.

It's not so much these people themselves that are the problem as much as it is the reactionary and paranoid behavior of our government and society that results from terrorism.  As long as the government has the specter of terror around, they can justify all sorts of police-state leanings and policies.

Good point.  I'm not solely blaming us.  Apparently, Arabs and other Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia do a shitty job of helping each other out.  They'd rather demonize Israel and us while doing jack shit to help the Palestinians.

We did create a perfect environment for them to rise though.

well wouldnt the threat lie within the government itself?

you shouldnt blame the US at all.

the talban didnt get in charge until the mid 90's  long after our support for afghanistan and their war with the soviet union was over

we created it?  I would think 1000s of years of conquest by hundreds of different peoples created that situation.  Afghanistan is one of the most conquered areas of land in the world.
