edit: i also met the commander of soviet forces, during the occupation of afghanistan.
i was writing a book on that whole deal, and thats how i wound up meeting them. this was five or six years ago now, but its a really interesting story.

Yeah, great movie, I really enjoyed it. The idea of a badass coke snorting, Russian repelling, whore sexing senator appeals to me.

Pretty good movie. 
Bit hollywood-ized, and I don't like Julia Roberts, but Hofman as Gust made up for any other faults...

I highly recommend the book

Great movie. Too bad our political leaders on both sides of the aisle won't take the lesson that it teaches.

That depends...  The Soviets were more powerful, but they had more to lose and could be reasoned with.  Jihadists/Islamists are generally not the most rational people you'll meet.  They have a lot less to lose, and while they aren't nearly as powerful as the Soviets were, they can continuously create chaos.

you know people blame the US for the taliban, but I find that beyond retarded.  We helped them expel the russians.  yes we left a power vacuum there, but why is that our fault?  why didnt their fellow arabs help them?  no admonishment towards them, just the US, and that is BS.

It's not so much these people themselves that are the problem as much as it is the reactionary and paranoid behavior of our government and society that results from terrorism.  As long as the government has the specter of terror around, they can justify all sorts of police-state leanings and policies.

Good point.  I'm not solely blaming us.  Apparently, Arabs and other Muslims in the Middle East and South Asia do a shitty job of helping each other out.  They'd rather demonize Israel and us while doing jack shit to help the Palestinians.
