By you guys I mean all you Amerikastani tax paying folk

The US has confirmed it hopes to use $230m of its $300m military funding to Pakistan in 2008 on upgrading the country's ageing F-16 fighter jets.
A report in the New York Times said some US Congressmen were dismayed, saying the jets did not help counter-terrorism operations.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino confirmed the upgrade but insisted the jets were for counter-terrorism use.
The planes have been used by Pakistan in counter-terror operations, but only rarely.
The U.S are not only being played by Israel when it comes to "Aid" like this, it looks like they're getting played by Pakistan as well...

Thoughts? A step forward in the war of terror or a waste of money that would be better spent elsewhere?

we should have a self-destruct mechanism in these parts that we give to our 'friends' so that when they are eventually used against us, we can just click the button and problem is gone.  kinda like C4-ing the enemy jet and then waiting at the end of the runway on wake.

this is really, really good.  it will only strengthen the pakistani military and our relationship with the most important ally in the region.  the people of pakistan will believe that the US is a partner for the long run.  This is exactly the best thing to happen, especially for the war on terror.  why arent people happy?

For all these reasons, a change in the strategic mindset of Pakistan’s military is now possible. Washington’s policy challenge lies in promoting and accelerating that change, weaning the army away from the Islamists, and cultivating an enduring partnership. Issuing threats — including to cut U.S. military assistance, end sales of major defense systems (such as F-16s), or curtail prestigious officer-training exchanges — is precisely the wrong approach. These threats weaken the United States’ friends and potential allies. They also arm skeptics in Pakistan’s military establishment who believe Washington will again abandon Pakistan once its tactical utility is gone.

Washington also agreed to upgrade the older F-16s, although these would have to be paid for directly by Islamabad.

But the BBC's Syed Shoaib Hasan, in Islamabad, says the new plan set out by the Bush administration would now include this upgrade within its anti-terrorism aid package.
Syed Shoaib Hasan should provide evidence. We've known about the military aid to Pakistan. If they want to burn it all up on fighters .. oh well. When they raise the total amount of aid then I'll join in the frustration.

So we (taxpayers) give them (Pakistan government) $300 million and they turn around and give us (U.S. defense contractors) $230 million back?

Regardless of the foreign policy standpoint, that's just absurd business (unless of course you stand to gain from said contracts...).

We've got 10x's more Indian Americans than Pakistani Americans. Maybe that's why.

Surely armoured ground vehicles would be of far more use than fighter jets, against terrorists anyway. This is all about getting the aid money back into the US economy. They should've bought bradleys or something, then most of the money would go into the British economy......

I think its all about showing the pakistani government that we will remain an ally for the long run.

They cant buy bradleys.  The Army is in fact having a bradley shortage at the moment.  The last ones built were from the mid 90's.  Need some new legislature in congress if we even want to think of producing more.  All we're doing is refurbishing the suckers.
