- Pakistan to get free F-16 upgrade, courtesy of you guys
you should do more research into the situation over there before you say something like that. thats what I did.CommieChipmunk wrote:

why? its easier to babble about the govt and find some youtube vids.God Save the Queen wrote:

The article even says they rarely use the F-16's against the terrorists. That's why I think it's a waste of money. Not that I'm some sort of arm chair general (look at my stats, I don't even like being commander) but I'm sure there is better equipment to buy/upgrade out there to fight terrorists. Especially on your own turf. Also, they have $300 million, and they're spending $230m on upgrading the F16's, overkill
I hope they line the inner bowels of those jets with remote controlled bombs so we can just blow them up when the Paki government is taken over by islamist militants..or if the government turns on us. I have NO DOUBT one of those will happen. WHich is cool because I'm sure India would love to test their nukes on islamabad and peshawar.
another stupid opinion
Yes, I hate Social Security too.CommieChipmunk wrote:

But seriously, the only way to win with our system is to invest in the companies that run things. If you already know millions upon millions will be spent on the defense industry through your taxes, then why not invest in them, so that this spending actually is doing something for you?
In many respects, smaller government is a pipe dream. There are far too many lobbyists at work for us not to do things like what this thread shows. You might as well cash in -- you know they definitely are.

Eisenhower warned us about this.

he also did things during his administration that made it possible for the military industrial complex to profit in more ways than before.

out of necessity? you could justify anything out of necessity.

Please.. I could find a more pervasive policy coming from a former Nobel "peace" prize winning president. You should place Eisenhower into some historical context, having just come out of a near civilization ending world war. Carter made it policy to intervene militarily if gas prices looked like they were going to go up. At least Eisenhower had the balls to warn us before dumping our money into the build up of foreign militaries.God Save the Queen wrote:

so I guess expanding the military's role in world affairs doesnt equal a larger military industrial base?
please what? all I did was present valid evidence which supports my statement, he increased the size and role and influence of the United States military in global affairs but he is remembered for his farewell address.
I never said I disagreed with what he did. I never bashed him. Why so defensive?

I'm defensive because if we ever needed a clear sign from a politician (the highest ranking) warning us about out of control unsupervised spending we had it. This crap that goes on now has become accepted. Washington is too powerful. As far as I'm concerned anytime the government wants to start giving away tax payer money in the hundreds of millions it should be voted on by the constituents. I get tired of everyone (not necessarily you) playing the poor me role when less than half of the country doesn't even show up to vote... the only tool we have to reign in these crooks is the ballot. You kinda fell in the line of fire.God Save the Queen wrote:

Building up the Pakistani and Israeli military (who could probably give two shits about American interest) doesn't even fit into this picture:

I'm tired of it.

Pakistan has recieved more than 10 billion dollars in official aid since 2001 and even more covertly.
The brits just doubled their aid.. although I don't know how much of that was in security.God Save the Queen wrote:

Im optimistic about Pakistan, which is rare. The more I learn, the more I realize conventional war with Iran is the absolute last thing that needs to be done.
Pakistan's economy has seen vast improvements within the last 7 years (ups and downs ofcourse but much stronger than it was in the 90's, no doubt aid money was a factor). Privatized their national bank system and is steering closer towards a fully democratic society.

Strategically this looks good, but in the long run...? At any rate, it's good to get Pakistan on the US's side to combat terrorism more effectively. They'll be more likely to cooperate with operations in their country.

You did vote for Bush, didn't you? IF so, then you really can't say much about excessive military spending.Kmarion wrote:

However, I would agree that we spend far too much on the military. Still, we've kind of reached the point of no return. The military industrial complex runs this country along with a few other corporate consortiums. At this point, it's more a matter of who to invest in and what lobbies to join rather than who to vote for.
Bush ran on the platform of being a conservative. He fed us a lie. And given the choice between Kerry and that douche bag gore I'd still vote for Bush. Two incompetent fucks that couldn't run a burger king. There is no such thing as "the point of no return". If you believe that than you truly have no grasp on the historic, real challenges humanity and your forefathers have faced.Turquoise wrote:

Last I heard, Congress was responsible for authorizations. And if you don't spend the amount they tell you where they tell you to spend it, you go to jail.
Who is it that runs the Congress again?
