Ask them if they've ever watch League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The Prestige, or read a Jules Verne novel. Brass, wood, and lots of clockwork gears and gadgets.

Assuming they've no background on the subject at all,

if they have background, then you could just say,

Remember that game at the arcade, where you have to pedal a bike to fly your balloon through other hot air baloons,

Remember the style of menu's they had? That's steampunk.

Steampunk=basically some parallel universe where steam power can be used to do everything in todays world, only 1-2(00) years ago. Also makes shit look retro yet work advanced.
