Last year, there was a mother who was concerned that her 15 year old son was too spoiled and soft. He did nothing but watch TV, play on the computer, and text message friends. She wanted him to get out and discover the meaning of work, so she asked if I would hire him to help with some of the massive amounts of stuff I have to do around here. I hired him to do landscaping ... basically hauling and spreading out about 20 cubic yards of mulch. Four hours later, he had moved about 8 wheel barrels of mulch ... and I found him sitting in the shade claiming that he was exhausted. Pathetic.
Crap, my 7 year old son can do better than that. He and I then spent the next 7-8 hours moving the remaining 19 yards of mulch - our shirts were soaked in sweat - and my son was like a steam shovel. He's learning what it means to bear down, grit his teeth and do some real work. Sure, someday he may be in a suit and tie in a temp controlled office, but he will have learned a work ethic that he can use for the rest of his life.
P.S. Work starts at 6 am ... oh, and no bathroom so you'll need to hold your piss for 8 hours. That should harden you the f*** up.
